Newtown Historical Society has two programs scheduled for Sunday, September 17. Thanks to the timing of the two, readers can take advantage of both events.

From 11 am until 1 pm, The Little Red Schoolhouse, at 7 Cold Spring Road (the front lawn of Middle Gate Elementary School), will be open.

Games from the past will be set up for all ages to enjoy, and light refreshments will be available.

‘The Great One’

Sunday afternoon, historian Mark Albertson will host a special presentation, “The Great One — Jackie Gleason.” Albertson’s program will begin at 2 pm at C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street.

The free event is sponsored by the historical society and the library.

One of the greatest American entertainers of all time — stand-up comic, situation comedian, dramatic actor, writer, director and producer, and arranger of music — Gleason appeared in vaudeville, night clubs, Broadway, was a stock player for Warner Brothers, and became a television icon, noted for The Honeymooners and Jackie Gleason Show.

Albertson is the historical research editor for Army Aviation magazine, and the historian for The Army Aviation Association of America. He has taught classes on military history at Norwalk Community College as well as the Lifetime Learners Institute.

He has also authored several books on military history.

As always, the historical society gladly welcomes everyone to the free event. Donations will be welcomed, and will benefit the historical society.

Reservations are not needed for either event but additional information may be available from NHS Program Facilitator Gordon Williams, at gmwllw@charter.net.

One of the greatest American entertainers of all time, Jackie Gleason’s wide range of talents will be the focus of the second of two special events planned by Newtown Historical Society for this weekend.
