Newtown PD Seeking Help Following Serious Accident

Newtown Police this morning are hoping to hear from anyone who witnessed a serious accident late Friday afternoon in Sandy Hook.

Police report a car vs motorcycle accident occured on Berkshire Road at its intersection with Sherman Street around 5:40 pm Friday, September 27.

Newtown police, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, a paramedic and Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue were all dispatched to that location following a report of an accident. According to police, Joseph Romeo Jr, 42, of Monroe, had been traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road (State Route 34) on a 2002 Harley-Davidson when a 2015 Honda Civic being operated by a 17-year-old female of Sandy Hook pulled out of Sherman Street.

The two vehicles collided, and Romeo was thrown from the motorcycle. He was transported to Danbury Hospital with what police say were serious injuries.

The accident caused extensive delays in both directions for quite some time. The roadway was completely closed for approximately 15 minutes at 6 pm, and then opened for alternating lanes of traffic for the next few hours.

The Newtown Traffic Crash Reconstruction unit responded to investigate the accident. Firefighters remained on the scene to provide lighting for nearly five hours.
