Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ soccer teams took on South-West Conference rivals Immaculate of Danbury and Joel Barlow of Redding this past week.

The girls doubled up Immaculate 2-1 in a home contest on September 23. Bella Gerace and Katie Rowan scored for the Nighthawks, with Rowan connecting on a well-placed shot from long range.

Newtown’s girls posted another 2-1 win in the Barlow game as Riley Powers netted the game-winner with just 14 seconds remaining. Rowan also scored for the Nighthawks, who overcame a 1-0 deficit. Goalkeeper Ryann Heim-Sherwood made seven saves.

Newtown’s boys have kept things close but were blanked 1-0 by both Immaculate and Barlow.
