The nationwide pool of semifinalists, which represent fewer than one percent of US high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. Grace has an opportunity to continue in the competition for more than 8,400 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $36 million, that will be offered in the spring. To become a finalist, a semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed by the Upper School head, and earn superior SAT scores. The semifinalist and a school official must submit a detailed scholarship application.
