The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will have Charles Ray painting in acrylic at its next meeting, on Wednesday, October 9, at 7:30 pm.

The program will be in the lower meeting room of Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street in Newtown (at the flagpole).

Mr Ray, a resident of Redding, will be offering a demonstration on portrait painting.

His current work focuses on one of several themes, which he finds himself returning to: cloudscapes, vanishing American still life, sunflowers, trees and shorelines. For the SCAN program, however, Mr Ray will use acrylics to paint with a non-traditional approach.

Charles Ray has retired as the director at Silvermine School of the Arts in New Caanan, a position he held since 1993. In addition he taught painting and drawing at Silvermine School for many years and is a Silvermine Guild Artist member. He also taught at Rowayton Art Center.

Mr Ray graduated from Hartford Art School and studied at Yale School of Art.

He has had numerous one-person shows and has been in group and museum shows throughout Connecticut, New York and neighboring states. In addition he has been commissioned for many corporate and private portraits. Presently he is teaching students privately.

Reservations are not needed for SCAN programs, but additional information is available by contacting Ruth Newquist at 203-426-6654.

Charles Ray of Redding, who created this portrait, will be the guest artist for the next Society of Creative Arts of Newtown program.
