To the Editor:

The Newtown American Legion Post 202 is proud to sponsor a Cardiology Prevention and Flu Clinic for all Connecticut Veterans and First Responders on Thursday, October 10, 3:30 to 8 pm, at the Newtown Community Center in Fairfield Hills.

This is a unique opportunity for members of our Community and our State to learn about potential cardiovascular conditions. It has been shown that combat exposure for veterans who have been deployed — as well as chronic stress that can affect veteran and first responder (fire, police, EMS) — can greatly increase the risk for heart disease at younger ages.

Clinical personnel from Dental Associates of Connecticut will attend to counsel attendees on the relationship between oral care and heart health.

Bethel Visiting Nurse Association will be providing flu shots. In order to ensure flu vaccine availability, please RSVP to Cris Fadus via e-mail at 4fadus@gmail.com.

A Connecticut Disabled Veterans Association advisor and a Danbury Veterans Center representative will be available to provide guidance for Veterans not currently enrolled in the VA Program.

A Federal and Connecticut Veterans Affairs Service Officer will be there to assist those who have questions, including questions regarding VA Benefits.

We are also collecting non-perishable items for FAITH Food Pantry. “Walk-ins” with items to donate are very welcome!

This event is co-hosted by the Newtown VNA, Newtown Health District, Dental Associates of Connecticut, Bethel VNA, Newtown Community Center, and the Chamber of Commerce of Newtown.

I want to thank all the wonderful organizations who have worked tirelessly to help us put this event together and to spread the word to everyone! This took many hours, days, weeks and months to put together with the support of many, many people. Thank you again to you all in advance!

Looking forward to seeing you there!
