Cross Country Teams Race In First Home Meet

Newtown High School’s cross country teams hosted a meet on the trails adjacent to Reed School, Newtown’s first home race of the season, on September 28.

The girls’ squad defeated Notre Dame-Fairfield 15-50 and Joel Barlow of Redding 23-36, and fell 31-24 to Pomperaug of Southbury.

Emily Litke was second overall in a time of 21:53, behind race winner Sophia Oliva of Pomperaug, who finished in 21:12.

Clara D’Amico placed fifth in 22:15, Grace Chiriatti came in sixth in 22:17, Bretta Petersen was tenth in 23:14, Ella Hage came in 14th in a time of 24:26, Alexa Martin was 16th in 25:16, and Chloe Karnas came in 17th in 25:26.

In the boys’ race, the Nighthawks defeated Notre Dame 15-50, and lost 48-15 to Barlow and 46-17 to Pomperaug.

Top NHS runners and times are as follows: Aidan Budge 18:15, Sam Staubly 19:38, Mitchell Schrader 19:39, Stephen Sibley 19:45, Jeremy Pankow 19:48, Colby Harrell 19:51, and Andy Zhang 20:05.
