To the Editor:

I am running for Legislative Council D3 and, if lucky enough to be elected, I will stand for strong schools, responsible budgeting, and a greener Newtown.

I believe that educating the next generation is one of the core responsibilities of town government. I have two children in Newtown High and am very proud of our school system. As a member of LC, I will support educational excellence.

Of course, nothing comes for free, and that means we need to make hard choices as to where we spend our tax dollars. As a former member of the Board of Finance, I understand there are no easy routes to reducing taxes, but I will work hard to assure we are getting good value for our tax dollars.

Finally, I will be an advocate for responsible development in Newtown. While we can’t simply hold back progress, I feel strongly that we need to encourage responsible development, which includes implementing sustainable energy alternatives wherever possible. As the mother of two teenagers, I am acutely aware that we must do more to assure we leave a healthy and viable world for our children. No, I am not advocating for expensive legislative mandates, unfair tax incentives, or anti-business policies. I am advocating for a change in mindset. Many opportunities exist for low-cost loans, tax credits, and even free services to help access sustainable solutions, lower energy use, and save money. Our municipality has done a great job installing solar panels across town, and we can and should do more. As stewards of this town, I believe we should be engaging with businesses and residents alike to encourage sustainable energy alternatives.
