The Newtown High School Marching Band and Guard began its fall competition season at Bethel High School on September 9, when they scored 73.5 and beat Naugatuck High School for first place.

On September 30, the band and guard continued their season at Trumbull High School and added to their winning streak against Naugatuck High School with a score of 77.6

This year, the group is competing in the US Bands Class 3 Open Division and worked on the music and drill throughout the summer.

The show, titled “The Dreamer,” is based on the Edgar Allan Poe poem “A Dream Within A Dream.” Under the leadership of NHS Band Director Aaron Ovsiew, the music and movement of “The Dreamer” is intended to convey the fleeting nature of time.

The group competed at MetLife Stadium for the Ludwig-Musser Classic on October 7, and will return there for its final competition of the season — the USBands National Championships — on November 4.

Grasso Festival Saturday

Newtown plans to host eight other bands at its annual Grasso Marching Band Festival on Saturday, October 14, at 5:30 pm. After all bands compete, Newtown senior band and guard members will be honored.

“Band and guard members have worked hard this season to put all three movements on the field,” said Ovsiew. “As we move to the later part of the season … I am excited to add in the finer details and share the full story of our show with the Newtown community.”

Ovsiew stated Sacred Heart University will perform at the show, “marking the first time a college marching band has performed at Blue & Gold Stadium.”

Admission is $12 for adults, $7 for students and senior citizens. Children ages 5 and under will be admitted without charge.
