Support Over Slander

To the Editor:

As Election Day draws near, my social media news feed is filled with attempts to slander candidates who are looking to fill positions across town.

Whether posting half stories with the intention to “stir the pot” or badgering candidates on topics that have been covered time and time again, it is unfortunate to see that many in our community are choosing slander of those they disagree with over the support of those with whom the agree.

These posts, comments, and questions have a clear agenda and their authors a clear target. Many who participate in these actions show a clear allegiance on personal social media for whom they support, yet in their conversations across town groups with large audiences, they tend to only “ask questions” about their perceived opposition.

Instead of slandering those with viewpoints that don’t align with your own, go out and show support for the candidates you do align with. Share their mission to gain votes.

And to the Town of Newtown:

Please do you homework before Election Day. Don’t cast your vote based on conversations on social media.

Visit the Republican Town Committee and Democratic Town Committee websites to learn about each candidate who will appear on your ballot. Better yet, visit one of the many meet and greets hosted by each party. Ask questions. Listen carefully.

Above all else, vote on November 2. Local elections matter.
