Newtown Gets A Taste Of Dominican Dancing With The Bachata Experience
On Thursday, October 8, Rebecca Devos and fellow instructor Randy Morales traveled to Newtown to present a beginner bachata class at C.H. Booth Library.
This was Devos and Morales’ first library program, which was quickly followed up by two other library programs across Fairfield County. It was also their first time teaching in Newtown, but the instructors hope to return and are in talks to host a possible four or six week progressive series. Following the breakdown of the basic steps, Devos and Morales then taught basic partner work and how to lead left and right turns.
Devos and Morales said of the class via e-mail to The Bee, “It went amazing! It seemed like the students had lot of fun, and we also had a great time ... [The participants] did great! They were able to dance a full song using the basics we taught by the end of the class. Bachata is [a] fun and easy dance to learn. It takes time to master, but it can [be] quick to learn the basics.”
Devos and Morales noted that a lot of Americans vacation in the Dominican Republic and the instructors want to share a piece of that culture with their students across the state. Morales himself is Dominican, and shared that bachata is “very cheerful.” Those who come and learn the dance can visit the country and be part of their culture.
The pair said, “After COVID, we know it’s been difficult for people to connect and they are seeking new and different experiences. Dancing is an amazing way to connect with new people, to connect with yourself, and the music. We love being able to enjoy a moment where we can [be] present with each other and want to share that with others.”
