Newtown High School's field hockey team, the No, 1 seed in the South-West Conference Tournament, fell 3-2 to visiting and No. 5 New Milford under an on and off rainfall on October 30.

The Nighthawks fell behind 3-0 in the third and scored with just over two minutes left in the stanza. Ellenoire Schoen scored off an assist from Mo Murphy, off Murphy's penalty corner insert and a quick passing exchange between the two Nighthawks.

Newtown sliced the lead to a goal less than four minutes into the fourth when Abby Ihlefeld connected. The Hawks proceeded to keep the pressure on and racked up 11 penalty corner opportunities in the game to just two for the Green Wave, but could not get the equalizer.

On the soccer field, the No. 6 Hawks visited No. 2 Brookfield and fell 3-0. Brookfield cashed in on a penalty kick in the first two minutes, The Bobcats fended off a pair of solid Newtown opportunities in the first half and pulled away.

NHS goalkeeper Grace Newsom had a strong showing with multiple saves and captains Ella Morits, Izzy Caron, and Kenzie Del Pozo put in a great effort in the loss, Coach Adam Bourret said.

Both the field hockey and soccer teams will look to rebound in the state playoffs.
