Newtown High School's boys' soccer team defeated visiting Middletown 1-0 in the first round of the Class L State Tournament on November 1.

The Nighthawks are the No. 16 seed and Middletown the No. 17 team in the bracket.

Manny Adomako scored off the rebound of Jonah Kaiser's shot midway through the second half. Goaltender Luke Doherty and the Nighthawk defense made the lead stand up.

Malakai Ortner, Adomako, and Kaiser played particularly well off the bench Newtown Coach Ryan Lyddy said.

Defenders Elias Brady, Ed Liu, and Ny'Cere Patterson were solid in front of Doherty who also came up with some big saves.

With the win the Nighthawks will visit top seed and South-West Conference foe Bethel in the second round on Tuesday, November 5 (game time is to be announced, scheduled for either 2 or 4 pm).

The NHS girls' soccer team fell 4-2 at Ridgefield in the opening round of the Class LL State Tournament. Lola Kessler scored on a breakaway and Jamie Rowan converted off a Leah Morris corner kick for the Nighthawks. NHS was the No. 21 seed and Ridgefield the No. 12 team.
