Reckless Driving

Police said they observed motorist Justin D. Moore, 18, of 20 Sunnyview Terrace, Sandy Hook, driving at high speed southbound on Mt Pleasant Road on the afternoon of November 1.

Moore was passing vehicles in a no-passing zone and was cutting off the vehicles as he passed them. Police said that after they stopped Moore, they found that he had positioned a homemade cardboard marker plate in the rear window of the vehicle he was driving; the plate had an invalid vehicle registration number.

Moore was charged with reckless driving, passing in a no-passing zone, and misuse of marker plates. He is scheduled for a November 20 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Dodge Vs Deer

While traveling eastbound on Route 34 in Sandy Hook near Thunder Ridge Road about 7:40 pm October 28, motorist William Fellone, 51, of New Fairfield, who was driving a 2000 Dodge Caravan minivan, encountered a deer, which had run into the road.

The Dodge struck and killed the animal. Neither Fellone nor a passenger were injured. Police took no enforcement action.

South Main Accident

Motorist Russell Phillips, 20, of Trumbull was driving a 1999 Honda sedan northbound on South Main Street behind a northbound 1986 Subaru sedan driven by Lisa Robertson, 40, of 16 Pastor’s Walk on October 26, police said.

Motorist Angelo Bodetti, 18, of 15 Cemetery Road was driving a 1991 Honda westbound on Button Shop Road. Bodetti then stopped in the northbound lane of South Main Street, causing Robertson, who was driving the Subaru, to stop suddenly. Phillips, who was driving the 1999 Honda, then struck the Subaru from behind. The 1991 Honda driven by Bodetti was not damaged.

 There were no injuries. Police issued Bodetti an infraction ticket on a charge of failure to stop at a stop sign. Police gave Phillips a written warning for failure to follow at a safe distance.

Boat Stolen

A Brookfield man, who had been keeping his boat near the Newtown Fish and Game Club’s boat launch on Taunton Lake Road, reported to police on October 28 that the 12-foot-long green Fiberglas johnnyboat was stolen sometime between late September and October 28.

Police are investigating the larceny and ask anyone with information about the theft to contact them at 426-5841.

Shoe Theft

Between 10 and 11:30 am October 27, someone stole a pair of Achieve New Balance athletic shoes from a display stand outside the front door of Olympic Sports at Sand Hill Plaza. The size-12 shoes are valued at $50. Police are investigating the case of sixth-degree larceny.

Flags Taken

Police are investigating the theft of three US flags from a Church Hill Road residence.

The theft occurred sometime between 12:30 and 2 pm on October 27. The thief stole the three flags from in front of the home.

One flag is a conventional US flag with 50 stars. A second flag is a replica of a 1776 flag with 13 stars. A third flag has 13 stars encircling the numerals “76” on a blue field.

Police ask anyone with information on the theft to contact them at 426-5841. The incident is a case of sixth-degree larceny.

Vehicle Damage

Police said they charged Richard F. Young, 39, of Shepaug Road, Sandy Hook, with first-degree criminal mischief on November 3 in connection with an incident at Hot Shots II, a bar on Mt Pleasant Road in Hawleyville.

Young allegedly damaged a Ford pickup truck in the parking lot by scratching it and by pouring paint thinner on it, police said. Police charged him with first-degree criminal mischief, representing more than $1,500 in property damage.

Young is scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court November 19 to answer the charge.

Larceny Case

Police report they stopped motorist Justin Harding, 17, of 50 Orchard Hill Road while he was driving on Platts Hill Road on the night of November 2. Police said they served warrants against Harding, and against a passenger in the auto, Eric V. Critelli, 17, of 114 Head O’ Meadow Road, charging each youth with fifth-degree larceny in connection with their alleged theft of street signs on October 11.

Police additionally charged Harding with possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle for his allegedly keeping a blackjack or bludgeon in the auto.

Police released each youth on a $250 bond for November 20 court appearances.

Jeep Hits Pole

Motorist Bradford Schalkam, 27, of Danbury was driving a 1993 Jeep Wrangler sport-utility vehicle westbound on Old Green Road about 1:30 am November 4, when he fell asleep at the wheel, exited the left side of the street and struck a utility pole, breaking the pole in half, police said. Schalkam did not require medical attention for a scrape to the knee. Police issued him an infraction ticket on a charge of failure to drive to the right on a curve.

Sandy Hook Deer

Motorist Frank M. McCloskey, 37, of 10 New Lebbon Road was driving a 1994 Acura Legend eastbound on Route 34 near High Rock Road about 8 pm November 1, when a deer ran onto the road and collided with the auto, police said. The auto received body damage, but McCloskey was uninjured.

Mt Pleasant Collision

Motorist Mark Collins, 42, of 18 Cobblers Mill Road, Sandy Hook, was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban sport-utility vehicle eastbound on Mt Pleasant Road near Johnnycake Lane about 9:45 pm November 4, when a deer ran into the road and collided with the vehicle, police said. The damaged vehicle was towed away. Collins was not injured. There was no enforcement action.

Oakview Crash

Police report a two-car accident at the intersection of Wasserman Way and Oakview Road about 3 pm October 24.

Motorist Roddie Steigman, 64, of Great Neck, N.Y., was driving a 1995 Saturn eastbound on Wasserman Way and then turned left onto Oakview Road and stopped. Motorist Christopher Perry, 17, of 20 Washington Avenue, who was driving a 1995 Volkswagen Jetta behind the Saturn, also turned left from eastbound Wasserman Way onto Oakview Road and stopped, police said.

The Saturn then backed up and struck the Volkswagen. There were no injuries or enforcement actions taken, police said.

Currituck Crash

Police report a two-car accident between a 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass driven by Maria Winkelmann, 63, of 99 Currituck Road, and a 1997 Nissan Sentra driven by Ailie Montague, 23, of 64 Osborn Hill Road. The accident occurred about noon on October 28 on Currituck Road. There were no injuries. Police issued Winkelmann a written warning for following too closely.

Drug Charges

Police report they charged Kelly Reutzel, 18, of 2 Moccasin Trail with first-degree criminal trespassing, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia on the morning of November 2 at Newtown High School, 12 Berkshire Road.

Police said that Reutzel, a former student, had been formally notified not to enter the school grounds but did so anyway, resulting in the trespassing charge. She is scheduled for a November 20 court appearance.

Garner Mail

Prison staff members at Garner Correctional Institution, a state high security prison on Nunnawauk Road, discovered a piece of mail containing a possible narcotic substance on November 3, state police said. The evidence will be tested in a state laboratory.

Chevrolet Into Tree

State police report motorist Jared Waters, 26, of Waterbury was driving a 1990 Chevrolet eastbound on Interstate 84, east of the Schoolhouse Hill Road overpass, about 3:30 pm November 3, when due to excessive speed, he lost control of the auto, exited the left travel lane and struck a large tree on the highway median. The impact of the crash ejected Waters through the windshield of the vehicle, according to state police.

Newtown Hook and Ladder and Hawleyville firefighters went to the crash scene, as did the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps. The corps transported Waters to Danbury Hospital for treatment of cuts and contusions.

State police charged Waters with driving at a speed to fast for the highway and failure to wear a seatbelt.

I-84 Collision

Motorist Henry Bissonnette, 71, of Enfield was driving a 1996 Ford van eastbound in the left lane of Interstate 84 near Exit 10 about noon November 2, when tractor-trailer truck driver Peter Arsenault, 44, of Burlington, Mass., cut from the right lane to the left lane and struck the side of the Ford, state police said.

Other details were not available.

Interstate Crash

Motorist Jennifer Brenner, 56, of Oxford was driving a 1996 Jeep westbound on Interstate 84 in the right travel lane about 7:30 am November 2, when she was struck by a tractor-trailer truck entering the highway at the Exit 9 on-ramp, which was driven by Rela Imanverdi, 65, of Phoenix, Ariz., state police said.

Other details were not available.

Truck Into Bridge

Tractor-trailer truck driver Robert Haevens, 28, of New Brunswick, Canada, was driving eastbound on Church Hill Road about 10:30 pm October 31, but did not realize that the trailer he was hauling was too tall to pass beneath the Housatonic Railroad bridge near Wire Road.

The trailer struck the bridge, causing roof damage to the trailer. Haevens was not injured. Police verbally warned him for the mishap.

South Main DUI

Motorist Kevin K. Donovan, 26, of Torrington was observed driving erratically on South Main Street about 2:15 am November 7. After Donovan was stopped for an investigation, he failed field sobriety tests, resulting in charges of driving under the influence and failure to keep to the right on a curve, police said.

After processing at the police station, police released Donovan for a November 27 appearance in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.

 

Deer Kill

Motorist Raymond A. Palmer, 39, of Monroe was driving a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee sport-utility vehicle southbound near 87 South Main Street about 8:45 pm November 7, when a deer ran into the road and collided with the vehicle, police said. The deer died. Palmer was not injured. There was no enforcement action.

Warrant Served

On learning that Daniel J. Riley, 42, of Bridgeport was at Bridgeport Superior Court, Newtown police traveled to that court about 2:30 pm November 7 and served an outstanding warrant against him on a charge of second-degree failure to appear in Danbury Superior Court.

The failure-to-appear charge stems from Riley’s not having appeared in Danbury Superior Court in connection with charges of speeding and operating a motor vehicle while under suspension, which Newtown police pressed against Riley last July, police said.

Police held Riley on a $500 bond for an appearance November 8 in Danbury Superior Court.
