Second Annual Halloween Walk

Brightly costumed children and their parents took part on Saturday, October 27, in the second annual Sandy Hook Halloween Walk, a three-hour festival in Sandy Hook Center that celebrated Halloween in the compact business district in the light of day.

Sponsored by the Sandy Hook Organization for Prosperity (SHOP), the event gives children an opportunity to show off their costumes in daylight.

Groups of children and their parents moved among the participating businesses during the festivities. They were assisted in crossing Church Hill Road by the Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company’s bright green-jacketed fire police unit.

Businesses that displayed a bright orange pumpkin symbol in their windows welcomed the trick-or-treaters with candy. Some business provided Halloween-related activities.

On the Stone River Grille’s deck, which overlooks the Pootatuck River, youths took part in pumpkin-decorating. A DJ entertained. Cotton candy and face painting were provided.

Getting in the spirit of the event, staffers at Fun Kuts, a barber shop at 111 Church Hill Road, wore colorful costumes in honor of Halloween.

Although the day was cool and cloudy, the weather for the Halloween event was better than last year when a freak October snowstorm hit the area. That storm later resulted in extensive power outages.
