Casino Night To Benefit Treadwell Park Playground

The Fireside Inn will be transformed into a dashing, dazzling place Saturday night for the fundraising benefit for the Treadwell Park playground. Casino Night, sponsored by the Newtown Lions Club and the Treadwell Park Committee, will begin at 6:30 pm.

Come out and test your luck at the craps table or the roulette table. Or maybe blackjack is a specialty. All will be featured at the event at the Fireside Inn on Route 25 from 6:30 pm to midnight. The cost of the event is $45. The ticket price includes ten free gambling chips and hors d’oeuvres throughout the evening.

Local merchants and individuals have donated prizes for the silent and live auctions that will be held during the event. Winnings from the gambling plus cash and checks will be accepted for the raffles.

Some featured items for the live auction include an autographed Joe Namath football, a case of good French wine given by Jim Berliner, 200 gallons of oil donated by Newtown Savings Bank, four tickets to a Mets game given by Dr Steve Landin, a $500 savings bond from Union Savings Bank, a one- to two-hour flight pass for three given by Dr Lionel Brown, autographed print and books from Stephen Kellogg, and 12 rolls of wallpapering given by Charlie Fadus.

The silent auction also has some goodies up for sale. Items include one hour of gardening consulting given by Maureen McLachlan, a fine bottle of liquor or wine given by Newtown Package, a six-foot sub given by Subway, free cleaning given by Nutmeg Cleaners, a free glider ride for one given by Rudy Szghetti, a one-quarter decorated sheet cake given by Andrea’s Bake Shop, two dinners given by the Inn at Newtown, a frame of Deegan painting given by Von O Framing, and a Frame of Kellogg print given by Keonig Framing.

It is not too late to get your tickets to help benefit the Treadwell Park playground. Stop by the Library, Newtown Health Club, Newtown Parks & Rec office, or just arrive at the Fireside Inn on Saturday, November 11, and press your luck!

The Treadwell Park Playground Committee has been raising funds for almost two years to provide two playgrounds at Treadwell Park. The cost for both playgrounds is estimated around $90,000. The first playground for ages two to five-year-olds was built October 22 by volunteers, but was tragically destroyed the evening of October 25 by fire. The committee has come together during this tragedy and raised over $31,000, but more funding is needed for the second playground that children over five will be able to enjoy. Both playgrounds will be handicapped accessible at the Park on Philo Curtis Road in Sandy Hook. The committee hopes to have the first playground rebuilt before year’s end and the second playground in the spring of 2001.
