Newtown artist Virginia Zimmerman is exhibiting a collection of her recent monoprints this month at Newtown Municipal Center.

“Ethereal Newtown” is on view until Decemebr 31. An opening reception, to which the public is invited, will take place Sunday, December 6, from 1 to 3 pm.

Saying that Newtown is losing its rural character, Ms Zimmerman sought out buildings and landscapes in town from an earlier time and used a multi-step artistic process.

As the artist chose her sites, she eschewed road signs, thinking they were intrusive.

The creation process for the art works included photographs, digital copies, hand painting and, finally, printing on archival laser paper. Each piece required six to eight runs in a printer, Ms Zimmerman noted.

The resulting show features 12 works, which were done in part thanks to result of a grant from Newtown Cultural Art Commission Ms Zimmerman received in 2014. The artist used that grant to study with master printers at the Center for Contemporary Printing in Norwalk. In her application for the grant, Ms. Zimmerman noted that she hoped to create prints that would reflect “landscape and collage in new ways.”

The resulting art, she notes, looks like “ghostly lands.”

Exhibitions at Newtown Municipal Center, 3 Primrose Street, are presented in the building’s main hallway. They can be viewed weekdays between 8 am and 5 pm.
