NEWPORT, R.I. — The Redwood Library will offer two winter seminar series, focusing on authors Henry James and Herman Melville, with sessions once a month for four months, February through May.

There will be a kickoff talk about Henry James by Dr Paul Armstrong, Dean of the College at Brown University, on Sunday, January 12 at 2 pm in the Harrison Room, Redwood Library. The Herman Melville kickoff talk will be given by Dr Mary K. Bercaw Edwards of Mystic Seaport on Sunday, January 19 at 2 pm, also in the Harrison Room.

Each seminar is an hour and a half moderated by an outstanding scholar from universities throughout New England. There will be supplementary events in the library throughout these months including James and Melville films, times and dates to be announced.

Also planned are a walking tour of Newport in the footsteps of Henry James, scheduled for April or May, and a day bus trip to Mystic to view the whaling ship and the Melville memorabilia there.

The Henry James Series will begin on February 4, meeting the first Tuesday of each month from 7-8:30 pm. The Herman Melville Series will begin on February 11, meeting the second Tuesday of each month from 7-8:30 pm.
