On Sunday, December 15, Edmond Town Hall Theatre will host screenings of The Shop Around the Corner (1940), starring James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan, at 1, 4, and 7 pm.

The first screening will be offered with captions.

Tickets for any of the shows are $3 each.

The story is set just before Christmas in a shop in Budapest, pre-World War II. The head clerk (Stewart) doesn’t get along with his new clerk (Sullavan). Little do they know that they are also anonymous pen pals who are developing a deep fondness for one another. Things get interesting when they decide to meet in real life.

Based on the 1937 Hungarian play Parfumerie by Miklós László, the story has been adapted several times for radio, as “In the Good Old Summertime”(1949) with Judy Garland and Van Johnson; for film, as You’ve Got Mail (1998) with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan; and also as a Broadway Musical called She Loves Me, which kept all the original characters from The Shop Around the Corner and added musical theater numbers.

Sunday’s screenings will be the final film in the Someday Cinema Series this year, presented by Newtown Cultural Arts Commission.

Proceeds from the series go toward the Edmond Town Hall revitalization project. For more information, follow Someday Cinema Series on Facebook or visit edmondtownhall.org.
