Following two days of wintry weather, Wednesday has dawned sunny and clear, but very icy.

A "vigorous" system, according to the National Weather Service, "will plunge from the Great Lakes through the Northeast to set up a few days of frigid temperatures, gusty winds and continued heavy lake-effect snow."

Patchy, icy conditions are possible through the morning, and temperatures are not expected to rise above freezing until later this morning, also according to the weather service.

Scattered snow showers are possible for this afternoon, but the wind will be the bigger concern. West winds of 7-11 mph will be regular, with gusts as high as 23 mph, the weather service predicted for Newtown, Wednesday morning. Wind chills will feel more like 20 to 25 degrees today.

Local roads are slick this morning, but continue to be cleared and treated by Town and State road crews.

Public schools have a two-hour delayed opening. The morning commute for others was quiet, with light traffic and no major accidents reported.
