State officials, including Governor Ned Lamont, visited Newtown High School to recognize senior representatives of the Class LL state champion football team on December 19. On hand with the governor was State Senator Tony Hwang and Representative Raghib Allie-Brennan (D2).

Gov Lamont shook hands of the players and invited the team members to the State Capitol to be formally recognized on opening day. He joked that the players could ask First Selectman Dan Rosenthal, who was also present, if they wanted anything done differently. “Shorter school year?” he suggested.

Rebecca Yungk, there representing Congresswoman Jahana Hayes (D5), presented the team with a proclamation from the congresswoman.

The proclamation reads: “This achievement is the result of your demonstrated leadership, perseverance, and commitment to the sport of football. Your hard work and determination makes you an example for others in the field. Take pride in knowing you had an undefeated season. Congratulations on this amazing victory! I wish you all great success in your future endeavors. I am proud to represent you in the United States Congress.”

Mr Rosenthal, who was on hand to see Newtown defeat Darien 13-7 at Trumbull High on December 14, with a dramatic touchdown on the final play of regulation, reflected on how his ticket for the game was money better spent than his New York Giants tickets, creating laughter among the Nighthawk players.

An animated State Senator Tony Hwang, also there to honor the players, told team members how enjoyable it was to see video of Riley Ward catching the winning touchdown pass from quarterback Jack Street, and running through the back of the end zone.

Each of the officials interacted with the Newtown players and joked with them. Mr Allie-Brennan encouraged the students to enjoy their high school days since time goes quickly.
