Reval-Related Tax Increases Will Hit Homeowners

To the Editor:

I know for certain now that the Property Taxes in Newtown are going to go much higher than a 0.8 percent increase.

When I spoke to someone at Vision Government Solutions this week about my property re-evaluation going up 40.2 percent, I was informed that though all the residential evaluations went up by 40-45 percent, the business property evaluations only went up by about 8 percent.

You don’t have to be a math genius to figure out that Newtown residents are going to have to shoulder the majority of the new property taxes. The person said there were new business properties added to the tax rolls, such as the Tractor Supply Store and the RV One Superstore, but I bet the town gave them a property tax cut incentive over several years to bring their business to Newtown.

I’d like to see The Newtown Bee put the Town Tax people on the spot and demand exact details about the tax roll and the actual planned mill rate increase.
