Sylvia Rita Luciano, 90, of Sandy Hook, Connecticut, wife of Stephen T. Luciano, died peacefully at home on December 16, 2022, with her family by her side.

In addition to her loving husband of 69 years, Mrs Luciano is survived by her son Thomas, his wife Lori, his daughter Lori Grasso, and her husband Bill Mutz, also of Sandy Hook. In addition, she is survived by four loving grandchildren: Richard “Ricky” Grasso, Gregory Grasso, Isabella Luciano, and Thomas Luciano. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

Mrs Luciano was born in Astoria, N.Y., on Leap Day, February 29, 1932. She was predeceased by her father, Valentine Esposito; her mother, Lucy Esposito; and sister, Catherine Motylinski.

Sylvia was a graduate of Bryant High School in Astoria, N.Y., and attended Packard Business College in New York, N.Y. Shortly thereafter, her family moved to Eastchester, N.Y., where she met husband-to-be Steve, the love of her life. They were married in 1953.

A resident of Sandy Hook since 2007, Mrs Luciano was a regular communicant of St Rose of Lima Church. Previously, she attended Immaculate Conception Church in Tuckahoe, where she was a member of The Rosary Society and Catholic Women’s Club.

In her professional career, Mrs Luciano held various administrative positions over the years with Remington Rand, Tuckahoe Construction Company, and Iona Preparatory School. After retiring, Sylvia spent winters at her Florida home, where she developed many lasting friendships. While she loved Florida, she chose never to relocate, instead preferring to remain close to her family in Sandy Hook.

Her pride and joy were her grandchildren. She unfailingly attended their many sporting and music events, near and far. She was a skilled baker who enjoyed baking cookies and cakes with and for her grandkids. One of her favorite pleasures was to travel. Together with her husband Steve they traveled throughout the United States and visited many countries. She enjoyed taking long rides, often with no destination in mind, just to view the scenery. Fall foliage and Christmas lights were among her favorite sites.

Sylvia was blessed with many close friends and relatives and enjoyed an active social life which included playing bridge and, in her later years, mahjong. She was an avid player and looked forward to regular Wednesday games with her neighbors. She loved the sun and being outdoors, whether it was gardening, reading on the patio, relaxing at the pool, or spending afternoons at the beach in Florida.

A Memorial Mass to celebrate Sylvia’s life will take place on January 3, 2023, at St Joseph Church, 1 Obtuse Hill Road, Brookfield, Connecticut 06804, at 11 am.

To honor Sylvia’s memory, the family asks that, in lieu of flowers, any donations be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
