Poetry In The Whirlwind Of Imagination

The C.H. Booth Library Creative Writing Group for Young Adults will offer Poetry this fall, on five Monday evenings, October 18, 25, and November 1, 8, 15, and 22 (makeup date). The group will be led by poetry lover Liz Arneth, retired English teacher and Newtown resident, with volunteer assistant Donna Renzulli, one of the library’s adult writer volunteers, and teen mentor Emily Ashbolt.

All free sessions will meet from 6 to 8 pm, and allow time for writing and sharing poems in progress, as well as one-on-one communication between adults and young people. There is a limit of ten students in grades 6 through 8, who love to write poetry.

Participants are expected to attend all five sessions, and preference is given to Newtown residents and students. For more information, speak to Margaret Brown, young adult librarian. Sign up online at chboothlibrary.org.

The theme for this year’s poetry session is “Dr Alphabet Meets Sandford Lyme.”

“Two wonderful books are now in my possession filled with incredible ideas for the YA Creative Poetry Writing Session,” said Ms Arneth. “Both of these poets believe that their methods of teaching poetry are based on an innovative principle — that changing the physical elements of writing provides new ways to make poetry.”

Creative Writing for Young Adults is an ongoing program at the C.H. Booth Library, funded by the Friends of the Library. “Poetry” is offered each fall; “Fiction” in the winter; “Mysteries & Thrillers” in the spring; and “Writing Camp” in the summer.

Young writers are encouraged to participate in this opportunity to develop their writing style in a friendly, relaxed group setting, with guidance from experienced authors and teachers.
