Schools Will Be Closed On Veterans' Day

Newtown Public Schools will not be open on Veterans' Day next year.
School officials last week proposed breaking tradition in the 1996-97 school
calendar and holding school on Veterans' Day (Tuesday, November 11), but
changed their minds after receiving negative feedback on the idea from two
local veterans' organizations.
Instead, schools will be in session on Columbus Day (Monday, October 14).
While students will have Veterans' Day off, teachers will head in for an
in-service day.
Superintendent of Schools John R. Reed said holding school on Veterans' Day
was considered because the school district was in need of more school days in
November. He believed students would recognize the national holiday if they
participated in school programs, honoring those who lost their lives in war.
Members of both the Veterans of Foreign War and the American Legion were
opposed to the plan, according to Board of Education Chairman Herb Rosenthal,
but appreciated being consulted by the school district.
The Board of Education approved the school calendar Tuesday night.
In other discussions on the school calendar, board member Isabelle Murray,
noting that schools are closed for just one day (Monday, February 17) in
February, felt a longer break during the month is necessary due to illnesses.
Even better, said Amy Dent, would be a week's vacation in March instead of
April because it would satisfy both the skiers and those searching for
sunshine.
Dr Reed agreed, pointing out that other school systems in Fairfield County
have scheduled a March vacation for next year.
"So this is not a unique idea and I would consider it when putting together
next year's calendar," Dr Reed said.
