The Berklee College Jazz Festival held annually in Boston has been termed the
"Academy Award" event of the year by Newtown High band director Jack Zamary.
It's a gig that is definitely not to be missed, Mr Zamary said, especially
since so many fine high school jazz bands are always in attendance, both
performing and competing.
This year, more than 2,000 student musicians from 175 high school jazz
ensembles traveled to Boston for the competition, which is the largest of its
kind in the country.
The festival took place March 8 and was particularly notable because the
Newtown Jazz Band captured Third Place honors, earning $1,500 in Berklee
tuition scholarships.
The Berklee College of Music offers student musicians courses of study toward
a fully accredited four-year baccalaureate degree or diploma. The curriculum
includes majors in such fields as performance, composition, music production
and engineering, film scoring, music business/management, music synthesis and
music education.
The college inaugurated a new music therapy major in the fall of 1996.
