The Blue Breeze 2, The Lightning Strikes 1: In a driving downpour, both teams persevered and played an exciting close fought match. The Blue Breeze carried the day led by Charlotte Branchflower’s two goals on assists by Emma Magazu and Gabriella Sadowski with help from Morgan Seras and Olivia Buchler. The Lightning Strikes battled back with offensive pressure supplied by Becca Filiato, Mary Sortino and Alyssa Bailey, but the Blue Breeze defenders Sophia Bajcer, Katie Stan and Maddie Stites held them off. The Lightning Strikes lone goal was scored by Kaley Meisenheimer (who was on loan from the Wildcats) and its defenders Megan Riccardi and Taegan Smith kept the game close. The game’s ending was as wild as the weather with multiple scoring opportunities for both teams, but the Lightning Strike’s Hailey Wilson and Blue Breeze’s Bailey Buchetto each stood tall in goal.

U10

Twisters 1, American Eagles 1

Isa Galassi’s first tally of the season was the lone goal for the Twisters. Heidi Poarch played her best offensive game of the season. Lindsey Gallagher played well on offense, and her attack on goal hit the post. Emma Stierle was strong at midfield, while Vanessa Tucker played good defense. Hana Rosenthal assisted Greta Capeci on the sole score for the American Eagles, while the Eagles defensive unit, anchored by Grace Sholtes, Sarah Simenson and Cathy Hyeon prevented multiple attacks from an excellent overall opponent. Kaysie Fisher played outstanding goal throughout the contest, deflecting multiple aggressive attacks on net.

Twisters 2, Dynamites 1: With both teams short on players, the Twisters and Dynamite ended up with a great game. For the Twisters, Colby Troy and Liz Weisgerber each scored goals. Janyce Toth was strong on D and in goal, Vanessa Tucker was super in goal and Ali Toth was awesome at midfield. The Dynamite’s goal was scored by Merije De Wit and assisted by Sarah Tressler. Madeline Ceci and Briana Castellano played strong games, while Madeline Hossler and Kristina Goeree were outstanding in defense.

Norwalk 4, Dynamites 0: Lauren Carrino was spectacular in goal in the first half making multiple saves, including a direct kick. Alison Kelleher had a shot on goal. In the second half, Lu Hage was in goal and got good support from the defense of Audrey Benson, Grace Corcoran and Lauren Carrino, but they were unable to slow down Norwalk. Jenna Lavelle had a shot on goal and Brooke Antous, Rebecca Gavel and Katie Sailer fought hard on offense. On Sunday, the Dynamites played their last league game of the season against visiting Greenwich. The Newtown squad won 5-0. Alison Kelleher, Rebecca Gavel, Lauren Carrino, Katie Sailer and Lu Hage all had shots. Keeley Kortze made some saves in goal. Jenna Lavelle scored the first goal. In the second half, the drilling continued with a shot by Alison Kelleher that was rebounded by Jenna Lavelle for a goal. Grace Corcoran and Lu Hage were on defense and Keeley Kortze was in goal. Audrey Benson had a shot on goal. Alison Kelleher made a cross to Lauren Carrino for the game’s third goal and Katie Sailer made two goals within minutes of each other to end the game with the win. The Dynamites finished the regular spring season with only one loss, and as runner-up in the Newtown’s Memorial Day Kickoff Tournament. Audrey Benson won the team’s sportsmanship award that was presented at the travel banquet. The girls will conclude the year with a tournament in Hershey, Penn., this weekend.

Newtown Sparks 4, Weston Blue 2: Loaded with action in the first half of the game, the Sparks’ final season game ended in a win. Kristen Cirone scored a goal early in the first half to have it matched almost instantly by Weston. Newtown then scored 3 goals within 3 minutes of play led by Carly Swierbut with 2 goals and Laurn Adams with the third. Weston edged another high flying goal on a breakaway on Sparks’ goalkeeper Sarah Widmann. The second half brought a tighter match with neither team giving up a goal. After hurting her wrist defending the goal, Jackie Seras was replaced by Kristen Cirone who continued to keep Weston at bay. Sparks’ Emily Celentano had multiple great attempts late in the game only to be stopped by Weston’s goalkeeper. Other attempts during the game were made by Izzy Mawdsley, Nathalie Schickendantz and Gabrielle Reisert.

Newtown Panthers 2, Southbury 1: Coming off a fine (1-2-1) record at the Memorial Day Tournament, the Panthers brought home a (2-1) victory on Sunday against Southbury. Maria Ringes displayed her awesome catlike instincts fending off Southbury shots on goal. The venerable defensive powerhouse, Audrey Sedensky continued to lead her team by never giving up on defense. Diana Kirkman and Greta Staubly kept up the fight, making Southbury earn every inch of the field. Kira “the Cast” Kelly showed that a little broken finger cannot keep her down as she dominated with her footwork. The defensive effort was rounded out by Catherine “Stonewall” Shaw’s smart body blocking. The Panther’s offense was led by Isabelle Jimenez who made her presence known at every end of the field. A part of the Panther’s dynamic duo, Isabelle Jimenez assisted in both of Alexis “Mas” Mason’s goals. The determined, Alexis Mason showed the Sunday morning crowd what it means to put the ball in the cage with her boot. Charli Condon and Mary Hufziger showed real teamwork with their pass placement and efforts to move the ball up field. And finally, the heart of the Panthers was on display when Juliette Grover took an epic hit in her effort to follow through with a shot on goal late in the second half.

U12

Newtown Dynamite 7, Fairfield 2: On a soggy Sunday morning the Newtown Dynamite played an impressive game against Fairfield. Despite Fairfield scoring a quick first goal, the Newtown offensive remained tenacious. The Dynamite’s Mallory Lobuglio scored two goals in the first half. Also adding to the first half scoring was a goal by Cassidy Keller assisted by Claire Beiter. Stephanie Carr had a strong half in the goal for Newtown. In the second half, the Fairfield offense came out strong, again scoring quickly at the start of the half. The Dynamite offense, however, proved too much for Fairfield. A booming shot by Megan Kelleher found the net next. That was followed by a goal by Mia Katsuleres set up by Alexandra Manoni and Taylor Pare. The scoring continued with a goal by Amanda Albanesi assisted by Lauren Cirone. A second goal by Albanesi rounded out the scoring.

Darien 2, Newtown Dynamite 0: After beating Fairfield, Newtown Dynamite traveled to Darien for their second game of the day. Playing shorthanded, the Dynamite put forth a valiant team effort. In the first half with Maya Neuhoff in goal and the strong defense of Katie Elkins, Amanda Albanesi and Brianna Lutz, Darien was kept scoreless. During the second half, Newtown worked hard on the offensive end. The tireless effort of Lauren Cirone and Taylor Pare sparked the offense. The best scoring opportunity came on an Alexandra Manoni blast. Mia Katsuleres and Sophia Albano had shots on goal in the half as well. Mallory Lobuglio came up with big saves in goal. Darien, however, was able to score and held on for the win.

Greenwich 4, Newtown Thunder 1: Hailey Conrad scored the lone goal for Newtown.

Newtown Thunder 4 Norwalk 0: Newtown bounced back from a rough loss with their most productive output of the season. Less than 30 seconds into the game, Hailey Conrad raced down the left side and blasted a kick into the upper corner of the net for a quick Thunder lead. Newtown kept the pressure on for the remainder of the half due to the aggressive play of midfielders Jess Maturo and Lauren Beier. Early in the second, Emily Neave got on the board with a perfect cross from Conrad. Neave netted her second goal of the contest with an assist off a free kick from Kendra Dunnigan. Middies Claire Beiter and Olivia Caplan forced several Norwalk turnovers that eventually led to a final goal by Conrad on a pass from Neave. Norwalk’s rare penetration into Thunder territory was quickly thwarted by the superior defensive play of Meghan Kelleher and Emily Montoya. Steph Carr, Julia Sughrue and Meghan Doyle shared time in goal and recorded Newtown’s fifth shutout of the season.

U14

Smiters 3, Rockets 1: Emma Burns scored two goals for the Smiters, and Carly Grossano scored one. Kaitlyn McNichols played fearlessly in goal and was great in offense. For the Rockets, Megan Milano scored their lone goal after taking a great centering pass from Hannah Booth. Becky Frank and Lexy Bdick had strong games on defense.

Rockets 3, Team Two 2: The Rockets won a close, hard fought game. Kelly Coughlin, Jess Coughlin and Emily Jerris led the way with one goal each. Emily Booth and Gillian Milano had stand-out games on defense.

Boys

U8

Vipers 2, MadMen 1: Ethan Correia had two goals with the support of Thomas Armstrong and Ryan Ruddy. Brandon Lutz and Steven Cheh were strong in net with the support of Ryan Ferral, Justin Zerno, Tyler Dimartino and Andrew, Matthew and Nicholas Jacobs in front of them. The MadMen suffered their first loss of the year in this hard-fought contest. William Tainter-Gilbert, Steven Lueci and Tucker DuPuy played hard-nosed defense throughout the game. Daniel DeBartolomeo, Ethan Parsons and Johnathon Taylor were strong in goal, repeatedly stopping the opponents shoots. Riley Ward powered the offense scoring the MadMen’s only goal with a great shot from 30 feet out.

Nighthawks 6, Knights 3: The Nighthawk scoring was done by the trio Tanner Trede (three goals), Jack Peterson (two) and Duncan O’Leary. Jake Anthony, Jake Mailloux and Zachary Riley anchored the defense, while Max Cruwys-Hayes, Richard Qi and Colin Zhang hustled all game long. For the Knights, Julian Totir scored his first career goal with a knife kick into the corner of the goal. Connor Faxon handily defended any offensive moves and displayed cat-like reflexes with every strike. Gavin Craft was massive in offense with powerful kicks and drives. C.J. Hoekenga displayed highly controlled maneuvers as he traversed the field in numerous offensive drives.

U10

Darien 8, Newtown Nuggets 2: Newtown, missing its regular goalie, struggled against a tough Darien team. Newtown was able to mount some offense as Harvey Long made a nice pass to Colin Dunn to get Newtown’s first goal. Miles Martiska took a valiant turn in goal, making some nice saves and keeping Newtown in the game. Sean Connor again played brilliant defense, running down their forwards before they could shoot, with Aiden Schmid and Cory Furrier also nicely protecting the zone. Brian Montoya also had a great shot on goal, with good backup from Tyler Dickinson and Isaac Silverman. Late in the game, Colin Dunn got a pass to Miles Martiska who scored a second hard-earned goal for Newtown.

Newtown 7, New Canaan 1: In a turnaround from the previous day, the Nuggets won a lopsided victory against New Canaan, with four players scoring. Harvey Long got them on the board first, with a nice pass from Tyler Dickinson. A shot just under the crossbar tied it up for New Canaan, the only goal allowed by the outstanding goaltending of Thomas Hartley. Newtown followed up with aggressive play and several nice shots that were just a bit high. Shea Talbot got the go-ahead goal, followed by another from Colin Dunn. Harvey Long contributed two nice goals, while also playing some solid midfield work. Shea scored a second for the day, while Aiden Schmid was in the thick of it, again pressuring the other team with shots and passes. Cory Furrier and Miles Martiska contributed to the offense, constantly turning the ball back towards the New Canaan goal and clearing it up to the front line. Brian Montoya, a pillar on defense, played forward for a time and took the opportunity to add another goal. Sean Connor, along with Isaac Silverman, were relentless on defense, denying them several opportunities on breakaways.

U13

Stamford 4, Strikers 2: Excellent effort by Cole Rogalin, Omar Rodriguez and James Carney. Standout play by Chris Rovelli.

Burlington Eagles 3, Strikers 0 (State Cup semifinals): Tyler Dullinger played well in the game.
