Hawks Compete On The Tennis Courts

Newtown High School's tennis teams took on New Milford, Masuk of Monroe, and Bethel, May 7, 11, and 12, respectively. The Nighthawk girls defeated visiting New Milford 7-0, lost 5-2 to visiting Masuk, and topped host Bethel 5-2. The boys beat host New Milford 7-0, edged host Masuk 4-3, and blanked visiting Bethel 7-0.

For the girls, in the win over New Milford, top singles player Emily Anderson won 6-0, 6-0; No 2 Charlotte Grasso won 6-2, 6-3; No 3 Livia Mustachi won 6-3, 6-1; and No 4 Maria Souza cruised 6-1, 6-1. In doubles play, the No 1 tandem of Elle Musen and Ella Romano won 6-1, 6-2; No 2 Grace Newsom and Lilah Hage won 6-0, 6-2; and No 3 Mallory McCall and Sofia McKirdy won 7-6, 6-1.

In their win over Bethel, the NHS girls got wins at first and fourth singles from Anderson 6-2, 6-2 and Souza 6-3, 7-6 as well as from all three doubles tandems: Musen and Romano 6-2, 6-4; Newsom and Hage 6-3, 2-2 (forfeit); and Caleigh Warde and McKirdy 6-2, 6-3.

On the boys' courts, against New Milford, No 1 player A.J. Singh, No 2 Ryan Hislop, and No 3 Noah Breuing all won by 6-0, 6-0 scores, and No 4 Cam Linnetz prevailed 6-0, 6-1. In doubles, No 1 Aarav Shetty and Gavin Rankin won 6-1, 6-1; No 2 Brody Paulsen and Joe Mele won 6-2, 6-0; and No 3 Sean Conlin and Ryan Gilman came out on top 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

In the win over Masuk, No 1 Singh won 6-3, 6-1; No 2 Frankie Cannizzo won 6-0, 6-0; and No 3 Shetty came out on top 6-1, 6-1. The No 1 doubles tandem of Ryan Hislop and Stephen Singlak won 6-3, 6-3.

Against Bethel, Singh won 6-1, 6-0, and Cannizzo, Paulsen, and Hislop all won 6-0, 6-0. In doubles, Shetty and Ryan Gilman won 6-0, 7-5; Singlak and Dan Tzackas also won 6-0, 7-5; and Breuing and Conlin prevailed 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 (tiebreaker).
