Baseball Team Wins Postseason Opener 7-3
Newtown High School's baseball team, the No. 4 seed, defeated No. 5 Immaculate of Danbury 7-3 in the South-West Conference Tournament quarterfinals at NHS on May 22.
Kieran Garrity broke a 2-2 tie when he ripped an RBI double down the left field line in the third inning.
Nighthawk catcher Ryan Schmidt threw out a base runner attempting to steal second to end the top of the fourth.
After starting pitcher Jamie Piccuillo worked around a leadoff hit, with help from a double play in the top of the fifth, Jack Carta gave NHS a 4-2 lead in the bottom half of the frame. Travis Rekos led of the last of the fifth with a booming triple to center field. Garrity was intentionally walked with one out and Carta blooped a single to right with two outs.
Immaculate got back to within a run in the sixth. Newtown scored three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Chris Moseman singled cleanly to left and Oscar Nordt came in to pinch run. Ryan Schmidt reached on a bunt single and JT Walsh sacrificed the runners to second and third with a bunt. Rekos followed with a two-strike RBI single to left for a 5-3 lead. Rekos then stole second base and Luke Libero walked to load the bases. Garrity drove in his third run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center and the Hawks tacked on another run for a four-run cushion.
Piccuillo tossed six strong innings, striking out ten batters. Trevor Stott pitched the seventh and fanned two.
Jordan Kenney, son of former Newtown soccer and basketball Coach Marc Kenney, collected a pair of hits for Immaculate.
