Vote For The Candidate, Not Just The Party

To The Editor:

As Election Day approaches, I encourage my fellow Newtown residents to take a few minutes to learn about the individuals asking for their votes.

Reading the letters in The Newtown Bee, I am struck by how often political arguments focus on parties rather than people. We hear about the need for partisan balance, the failures of one party, or the accomplishments of another. These may be legitimate considerations, but they leave an important question unanswered: What do we actually know about the individual candidates?

Party affiliation can provide useful information about someone's political philosophy. But it cannot tell us everything about their qualifications, integrity, judgment, experience, or willingness to work with people who disagree with them.

Consider what we expect when hiring someone for an important job. We examine their experience, ask about their qualifications, and evaluate their ability to perform. Why should selecting someone to represent us in government involve any less scrutiny?

I encourage voters to read candidate profiles, examine their records, attend debates, and ask questions. Look beyond campaign slogans and party labels. Consider not only what candidates promise, but what they have demonstrated.

Most importantly, be willing to recognize merit wherever you find it. No political party has a monopoly on good ideas, integrity, or capable leadership.

Our votes belong to us, not to a political party. Let's make them informed decisions.
