On September 12, Boy Scout Troop 70 held a Court of Honor for Ajit Singh, who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. The ceremony was well attended by friends and family, and filled the Alexandria Room at the Edmond Town Hall, according to troop members.
On September 12, Boy Scout Troop 70 held a Court of Honor for Ajit Singh, who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. The ceremony was well attended by friends and family, and filled the Alexandria Room at the Edmond Town Hall, according to troop members. (And the food, catered by Kolam, was fantastic, they said.) Assistant Scoutmaster Kevin Cragin, in part of the presentations, noted that it was just 40 years ago that he was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout in a Court of Honor ceremony â also as a scout in Troop 70 â also in the Alexandria Room. Thatâs pretty cool.
Two of Newtownâs fire companies were among 100 state companies participating in the 2010 CT State Firefighters Convention Parade, the culminating event of the 127th Connecticut State Firefighters Association Convention, last Sunday afternoon. The parade stepped off at noon, and when all was said and done, the two companies brought home four trophies between them. Botsford Fire Rescue received the trophy for Best Appearing in Coats Runner Up. Meanwhile, Sandy Hook carried home a trio from their visit to New London, receiving the trophies for Best Appearing In Shirts Runner-Up, Best Appearing Ladies Auxiliary Runner-Up and Best Custom Apparatus Runner-Us. Congratulations to all!
The indie movie Fifth Form, co-authored by Newtown native Bill Stern and his friend Adam Orman, is under contract with distributor Trillian Entertainment, a Media 8 division. The movie has won several honors at film festivals around the country, and screened this past winter at the C.H. Booth Library. For those who didnât get a chance to see it then, this new distribution means that Fifth Form may make it online, to TV, and onto video-on-demand. Keep an eye open for it.
If the fall cleaning bug grabbed hold of you and you donât know what to do with all of the clothes you pulled out of the closet, bag them up and bring them to the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps Clothing Drive, Saturday, September 25. Corps volunteers will be at the 77 Main Street ambulance garage collecting gently used clothing, linens, and small household appliances between 8 am and 4 pm that day. All items will go to the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center, and tax receipts will be available.
Then be sure to stop by the Newtown Middle School where the annual Health Fair will take place, from 10 am to 2 pm, on Saturday. There will be drawings for great stuff all day long, a flu shot clinic, a blood pressure station, and lots of other health-related booths and events, of course. Iâm looking forward to rubbing noses with the cows from Paproskiâs Castle Hill Farm that will be visiting there, and maybe lapping up a small bowl of fresh milk.
RIS teacher Gina Swansonâs family is grateful for the support shown by residents at the Master Zumba Class that took place September 10, at the school. Board members for the American Society For Scleroderma Research (ASFSR), Ginaâs family hosted the fundraiser for the society. Her mom, Maria DeCesare, reports that they took in $1,400 that night. Go to asfsr.org to find out more about scleroderma, or to donate to support research.
Calling all Good Eggs! Iâm still more than willing to bestow the dubious honor of Good Egg upon anyone nominated for the award. If you know someone who is rarely recognized for the good that they do, let me know, and Iâll see that they finally are acknowledged. Contact Nancy@thebee.com, subject line: Good Egg. I know they are out there!
Call us a little biased here at The Bee, but of all the non-Newtown corn mazes weâve heard about this year (because if you donât visit the corn maze at the Paproski familyâs Castle Hill Farm this season, youâre just not enjoying autumn to its fullest) weâd have to say we are leaning toward the elaborate one at Plaskoâs Farm in Trumbull. The twisty maze provides some 15 miles of trails, but frequent escape routes mean you can choose your own distance. Our reason for loving it? This yearâs design is a bumblebeeâ¦.
Despite the fact that I may appear to be âbumblingâ around at times, I hope youâll take time next week toâ¦. Read me again.
