“The team to beat” – it’s a tag reserved for the top teams and it’s a tag earned by the Newtown High School girls’ lacrosse and golf teams following some superb performances this past week.

The girls’ lacrosse team firmly established itself as the favorite in the South-West Conference with an 11-8 win over rival Brookfield on Tuesday while the golf team shocked Pomperaug, 144-145, last week to stake claim to first place.

Tournament play opens this week and its going to be busy for quite some time considering it appears that all but one Newtown team has reached its respective conference tournament as all nine teams have combined, thus far, for a 90-38 overall record

It was one of the worst kept secrets around and if there is anyone who hasn’t yet suspected or been made aware of the secret, here it is –

The Newtown High School girls’ lacrosse team is the odds-on favorite to win its third consecutive South-West Conference championship. That was made abundantly clear after the Lady Nighthawks dominated rival Brookfield, 11-8, on Tuesday night to improve to 13-2 overall, 11-0 in the SWC.

“We knew they would be a tough team to beat,” said Libby Feltch, who notched a goal and helped shut down an explosive Brookfield offense. “They were tough last year. But we made sure we talked on the pics and our slides. We have had trouble with that stuff.”

Not on Tuesday. The ‘Hawks took a 1-0 lead less than 30 seconds in the game and thoroughly shut down the Lady Bobcats throughout the first half, taking a 6-1 lead into the break. That lead hovered at six goals (at 7-1 and 9-3) before the ‘Cats finally made a push.

“We have always had good games with them,” said co-captain Rachel Maley, who scored three goals, notched three assists, and ran her career goal-scoring mark to 120 to bring her to fifth on the all-time scoring list right behind former teammate Karli Beitel. “We lost a lot of people and they though they might come in here and beat us, but we had them.”

It was not only the quick goal to open the game that sparked the ‘Hawks, but the way they possessed the ball and prevented Brookfield from doing anything. The ‘Cats did answer that opening salvo, but then the locals scored the last five goals of the half.

“Coming out strong and scoring early gets us in a good mood,” said Maley, who leads her team in goals (42) and assists (33) – not to mention points (85). “They came back, but I think we wanted it more than them.”

Courtney Gleason tossed in three goals while Lisa Vendel, Betsy Vendel, Jen Greenwood, Katie Sudby and Feltch all scored solos. Greenwood added a pair of assists. Lisa Isabella had a very strong game and made 12 saves, one coming with just 8:15 left to play after the ‘Cats had scored two consecutive goals and were threatening to go on a run.

Ashley Prizio scored four times to lead the ‘Cats.

The game wasn’t as close as the final score would indicate and, still, it could have been worse as the ‘Hawks had two apparent goals disallowed.

The win was a nice tonic for a team that was beaten handily by defending state champion Wilton, 13-7, on Saturday. Maley scored three times in the loss while Lisa Vendel scored twice. Feltch and Sudby also scored.

And last week, the locals pounded Pomperaug as Maley scored six goals and assisted on three others. Gleason added three goals and three assists while Greenwood tossed in three goals and assisted on two others. Meghan Bridges added three goals.

The ‘Hawks are still ranked fifth in Connecticut (according to laxpower.com) and 13th in New England. They will close out the regular season on Friday night against Notre Dame of Fairfield.

GOLF

Newtown 144, Pomperaug 145

Newtown 141, Notre Dame 187

Newtown 187, Bunnell 194

The Newtown High School golf team is getting a look at something it hasn’t seen in several years.

It’s the view from the top of the mountain in the South-West Conference, a position the Nighthawks earned last week with a dramatic and thrilling one-stroke win over perennial powerhouse Pomperaug at the Newtown Country Club.

The ‘Hawks topped Weston back on May 7 and added the 144-145 win over the Panthers last Thursday remain undefeated in the SWC.

“We’ve done what we had to do,” said head coach Jenn Huettner. “We beat Weston and Pomperaug. The door is open. Now the guys have to do out and do it.”

That is, capture a SWC championship. After a 141-187 win over Notre Dame on Tuesday (a total of 9-over par, the best overall score the ‘Hawks have carded in a lot of years) the locals are 11-1 overall and 9-0 in the SWC.

The conference tournament will be on Friday, May 25, at the Ridgewood Country Club.

The locals had fallen to the Panthers in a non-conference tri-match back on April 9, but last Thursday they were much sharper. But even with Stephen Oberstadt coming in with a 1-over par 34, Billy McCann following with a 3-over par 36 and Pat Daly added a 5-over par 38, the ‘Hawks were prepared to throw out a more bloated score and waited with baited breath as the fifth man, JP McDade, finished up on No. 9.

McDade made the difference, turning in a marvelous 3-over par 36 to lift the ‘Hawks to the win.

The senior parred the first two holes, but notched three bogeys in the next four holes. A par on the seventh set the stage for a birdie on the cavernous par-3 eighth hole and that made a bogey on the ninth good enough for the win.

Nick Taylor was co-medallist with Oberstadt after turning in a 1-over par 34. Sam Pelletier, Jim Widman and Zach Somers carded rounds of 4-over par 37.

As hard as it is to believe, though, the ‘Hawks were even sharper on Monday in a 141-187 win over Notre Dame. Daly fired an even-par 33 while Oberstadt matched his 1-over par 34 from the Pomperaug match. McCann added a 3-over par 36 and McDade chipped in a 5-over par 38.

BASEBALL

Weston 9, Newtown 8

Newtown 31, Brookfield 10

The spring football season began with a flourish as Newtown High School walloped Brookfield, 31-10, on Monday. And like one observer said, it wasn’t the four touchdowns that was hard, it was the field goal at the end.

Wait a second … that was a baseball game?

Oh, boy. Bristling with frustration after a couple of losses, the Newtown High School baseball team took it out on Brookfield on Monday and – without a mercy rule to slow things down – pounded out 32 hits in a 31-10 win.

Ryan McGrath belted a pair of home runs – a three-run job and a grand slam – to drive in seven runs while Mike Tibbetts and Greg Rodden collected four hits apiece. Amidst all the carnage, 10 different Newtown players had multi-hit games (with six doubles and triples by Joe DeVellis and Nick Urso).

The Nighthawks were up 6-0 at the end of one, 8-1 at the end of two, 14-1 at the end of three and 21-3 at the end of four … and they still weren’t finished. Head coach Carl Strait subbed early and often and allowed players like George Zaruba and Matt Gastonguay to pick up a couple of varsity hits apiece.

With the win, the locals improved to 10-8 with two games left on the schedule – Stratford on Wednesday and Masuk on Thursday.

Lathering up the Bobcats might have helped the ‘Hawks recover a bit from a disappointing, 9-8, loss to Weston last week. A two-run triple and subsequent error allowed the Trojans to erase an 8-6, seventh-inning deficit. Tibbetts and DeVellis had three hits apiece, but one of Tibbetts’ knocks was a homer. Seth Hull chipped in with a pair of hits. McGrath was saddled with the loss.

Earlier, the locals were pounded by Bunnell, 16-1, and collected just five hits in the game. Two of those hits were doubles by PJ Cochrane and Tony Gallucci. The Bulldogs jumped out early on Tibbetts and reliever Jake DeVellis and posted a 16-0 lead before the locals could push a run across in the bottom of the sixth.

BOYS TENNIS

Joel Barlow 6, Newtown 1

Pomperaug 7, Newtown 0

The Newtown High School boys’ tennis team went into the final week of the regular season with a chance to qualify for the South-West Conference team tournament.

A slim chance, as it was, considering the two opponents closing out the schedule were Joel Barlow and Pomperaug and those teams made Newtown’s chances of reaching the tournament go from slim to none with 6-1 and 7-0 wins, respectively.

“There were some consolations,” head coach Marty Margulies was quick to point out. “Our 7-5 conference record gave us sole possession of fifth place in the 13-member league, just one position behind the qualifiers. And many of the individual contests against Barlow and Pomperaug were excruciatingly close.”

To wit – Adam Wenick, the only winner in the match against Barlow, dropped a three-set heartbreaker against Connor Widman of Pomperaug; the first doubles team of Timo Roehrs and Peter Manos suffered an equally tough loss to Pomperaug and extended Barlow, also; the second doubles team of Casey Tenney and Colin Jacobs lost to Pomperaug by a narrow 7-5, 6-4 score; and second singles player Chris Meier, perhaps playing his best tennis of the year, cruised past Dan Klufas of Barlow, 6-2, in the first set before running out of steam and losing the next two.

“We also seem certain to send most of our starting lineup to the SWC individual playoffs,” said Margulies. “And, once again, we get to send a full team to the state tournament. It has been a successful season, especially when one considers that we shall be losing only one regular senior starter and our remaining starters include four freshmen.”

The SWC individual tournament will open Wednesday and Thursday, May 23 and 24, at Wolfe Park in Monroe.

They started out slow, but finished with a flourish.

After opening the season with three consecutive losses, the defending South-West Conference champion Newtown High School girls’ tennis team proceeded to win 10 of its next 12 matches to close out the regular season at 10-5 overall, 10-3 in the SWC.

That amazing run has staked the locals a spot in the SWC team tournament, which opened on Thursday. The locals grabbed the No. 4 seed and had to head down to see No. 1 seed Weston, which slipped past the ‘Hawks, 4-3, back on April 10.

The last of Newtown’s 10 wins came on Monday, a 5-2 defeat of Lauralton Hall – the very team which started the Lady Nighthawks off on their season-opening three-match losing streak way back on April 5. The ‘Hawks turned the tables on Monday, though, as Maxx Zimmer and Jenna Himmelfarb recorded singles wins and the three doubles tandems of Jenna Moser and Katie Serock, Nikia McFadden and Lauren DeFelice and Charlotte Manos and Erin Nemeth all recorded wins.

That came after a 6-1 pounding of Pomperaug in which every match – save one – were straight sets. Zimmer had the toughest go of it in a 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win over Kristiane Huber at No. 3 singles. Kristene Salbu was saddled with the only loss in a 7-5, 6-2 defeat at the hands of Emily Broderick.

The week started out with a 4-3 loss to Joel Barlow. It was the second time the ‘Hawks lost to Joel Barlow and the fifth time (meaning all five losses this season) the locals were stopped by a 4-3 count. Himmelfarb was the only one to capture a singles win with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Tori Bailey in the No. 4 slot. Moser and Serock were stopped at No. 1 doubles, but the McFadden/DeFelice and Manos, Nemeth tandems both captured wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

SOFTBALL

Bunnell 4, Newtown 0

Newtown 1, Brookfield 0

The bats have not been working like they used to, but the Newtown High School softball team has still managed to improve to 15-2 overall and 10-1 in the South-West Conference.

In two games this past week, the locals scratched out just 11 base hits and one run while falling to Bunnell, 4-0, and nipping Brookfield, 1-0, in 10 innings. And it doesn’t look like their offense is going to have an easy run to the end of the regular season, either, since Stratford (Wednesday), Masuk (Thursday) and Lauralton Hall (Friday) are on the horizon.

Against Brookfield, it was a case of déjà vu all over again. Much like a 3-2, extra-inning win against Pomperaug on May 7, senior Sam Ciaccia had the key hit and was driven home with the game-winning run by Melissa Fracker.

Ciaccia slapped a lead-off double off Kayla Berardi of Brookfield in the top of the 10th, was sacrificed over to third by Kelley Tenney, and then scored on a single by Fracker (against Pomperaug two weeks ago, Ciaccia tripled and scored on an infield grounder by Fracker).

Nora Lynn Shimko singled twice to lead the ‘Hawks. Joanna Barry and Tenney also had hits. On the rubber, Legros scattered five hits, walked three and struck out eight for her 10th win of the season. She has 79 strikeouts in 88 innings of work and a miniscule 0.79 ERA.

In the loss to Bunnell, Legros was reached for a run in the first, another in the fifth, and two more in the sixth. Legros allowed eight knocks, one a triple to Sarah Calgreen and another a double to Carrie Fenn-Phillips.

Caitlin Cosgrove tripled for the ‘Hawks. Kate Bowen and Tenney also collected singles.

BOYS LACROSSE

Newtown 10, Pomperaug 8

Newtown 13, South Windsor 5

Brookfield 21, Newtown 15

As rough as the season has been at times for the Newtown High School boys’ lacrosse team, it was looking at the possibility of closing out the schedule on a four-game winning streak.

Until Brookfield got in the way.

After wins over Pomperaug (10-8) and South Windsor (13-5), the Nighthawks ran into a fired-up Brookfield squad and got locked into a shoot-out. When the flurry of offense was finally slowed – only by the final horn – the Bobcats had earned a 21-15 win.

The offenses started cooking early in the first half and Newtown was leading 7-5 with 10 minutes to go in the second period when Brookfield made a push, finally tying the score, 11-11, at the break. Things stayed close until the fourth period, with the score tied 15-15, when the ‘Cats exploded for six unanswered goals and the win.

Christian Beitel tallied five times for the ‘Hawks, who dropped to 4-10 overall, 3-4 in the SWC. Will Mahony added four goals while Brian Reszoly and Travis Speer tossed in two goals apiece. Reszoly and Zach Varga notched a pair of assists and Kyle O’Connor added one.

In the win over South Windsor, Brendan Martin and Mahony scored three goals apiece while Beitel added two. Jacob Dauz, Reszoly, Collin Babbage, O’Connor and Zach D’Agostino each found the back of the next once. Beitel and Reszoly added two assists each while Martin, Mahony and D’Agostino notched one apiece. Varga, D’Agostino and O’Connor each notched an assist.

Newtown out-shot South Windsor, 42-17.

In the win over Pomperaug, Babbage and Reszoly popped in three goals apiece while Mahony added two goals and three assists. The ‘Hawks out-shot the Panthers, 38-19, and Max Beitel earned the win in the cage with four saves.

The locals will close out the regular season on Friday at Notre Dame.
