Recycle That Magazine

*Help! Does anyone who subscribes to The Economist magazine want to donate their subscription to the library once they’ve finished with it?

We had a generous donor who helped us out in the past, but they’ve moved out of town, and so we no longer have copies available for our periodicals collection.

Exhibition Openings

Curator Mary Thomas would like to invite residents of Newtown to share their collections with library patrons for display on a temporary basis. Call the library at 203-426-4533  if you’re interested in sharing your special interest with others.

Children’s Programs

*Dive Into the Ocean with Author Karen Romano Young:  Author, illustrator and science journalist Karen Romano Young will show slides from her trip down into the ocean in a submersible named Alvin on Wednesday, April 21, at 2 pm.

After the presentation she will lead participants in a shark drawing activity. Karen will also sign copies of her books following the program, which is for ages 7-12.

Registration is requested and can be done online.

Young Adult Programs

*Drawing Workshop: Newtown artist and resident Suzanne Lang will offer another Basic & Perspective Drawing workshop on Saturday, April 17, from 12:30 to 2:30.

The program is limited to 15 students ages 10-18 (grades 5-12) who either live or attend school in Newtown. A $5 supply fee is payable at the program.

Students must register online at CHBoothLibrary.org. No previous drawing experience is required to enroll.

Mrs Lang says, “Anyone can learn to draw; it just takes motivation and a lot of practice!”

*Book Discussions: The Nonfiction Book Group will meet on Tuesday, April 6, at 1 pm, when they will talk about The Scratch of the Pen by  Colin P. Calloway; and The Daytime Book Group will meet on Monday, April  12, at 1 pm, to discuss The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway.

*Be Bear Aware: Master Wildlife Conservationist and bear enthusiast Felicia Ortner will be presenting a program on black bears on Thursday, April 8, at 7 pm.

Felicia will dispel some of the myths associated with bears, provide natural history, information and talk about some of the results of the black bear research conducted by wildlife biologists in the state. Please register online or by calling the library.

*Pocketful of  Poems: Celebrate poetry month on Tuesday, April 13, from 10 am to noon, with Ginger Humeston.

We’ll share favorite poetry in a creative way, create a line or two of our own, plus enjoy a healthy brunch, and most of all spend a joyous and fun time with friends and neighbors.  Space is limited and reservations are a must; call the library or go online to make yours.

*Literature And Life, A Three-Part Lecture Series: In three lectures, Mark Schenker is discussing the relationship between literature and life for readers who see themselves as what Virginia Woolf called “the common reader”: the regular, literate reader who seeks more than pleasure and escapism from literature but who is not a professional critic or literary practitioner.

Programs will be on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 pm and continue with “Charles Dickens” on April 14 and then “James Joyce” on April 28.

There is no charge but space is limited and so registration is requested. Visit the library’s website to register.

*College Admissions: The Good, the Bad, and the Internet

Stephanie Klein-Wassink, the owner of Winning Applications, will visit the library on Thursday, April 15, at 7 pm, to speak about recent changes in the college application process. With the advent of Facebook, YouTube and Twitter the rules have changed. There’s a lot to know!

Please register online or calling the library.
