A second-place finish at the annual Jockey Hollow Tournament – now that seems like a pretty nifty way to conclude the 2003-04 season.

Anyway, the Newtown Middle School girls’ basketball team – which finished second at Jockey Hollow and then defeated Brookfield in the season finale – seemed to be enjoying it as they shared hot chocolate and a box of donuts at a team meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Lions defeated Brookfield, 39-24, in the first round of the Jockey Hollow Tournament before losing to the host team, 43-35 in the championship game. The Lady Lions then renewed their rivalry with Brookfield on Monday and came away with a 53-32 win.

In the tournament win over Brookfield, Katie Condon poured in 17 points while Morgan Knees had seven and Katie Schmidt had six. Caitlin Murphy, Caitlin O’Handley and Hannah Tenenbaum combined for nine points.

Schmidt also grabbed 11 rebounds while Knees (9), Megan Trosan (8) and O’Handley (7) were also strong off the glass.

In the tournament loss to Jockey Hollow, Knees led the Lady Lions with 11 points while Schmidt added 10. Tenenbaum and Katie Condon tossed in four points apiece while Jen Brill, Stacy Broughton and Trosan contributed two points apiece.

Knees grabbed eight rebounds and Broughton had seven. Trosan and Schmidt combined for seven more.

Knees, Schmidt and Condon were all named to the Jockey Hollow All Tournament team.

And in the regular season win over Brookfield, Knees popped in 20 points and dragged down 10 rebounds to lead the way. Condon scored nine points while Trosan added eight, Schmidt tossed in six, and Murphy and Bridie Rubino contributed four apiece.

O’Handley pulled down nine rebounds while Broughton and Schmidt combined for nine more. Tenenbaum and Beenish Ansari had a couple of fine floor games to pace the Lady Lions, who finished the 2003-04 campaign at 5-5.
