As energy prices skyrocket, AARP Connecticut is informing residents statewide about consumer programs and benefits to help them pay for heat.
Fewer than 16 percent of Connecticut residents who are eligible for low-income home energy assistance programs (LIHEAP) actually apply for those benefits, according to 2005 statistics from the National Energy Assistance Directorsâ Association.
Connecticut has the lowest percentage of recipients of all the New England states, according to National Energy Assistance Directorsâ Associationâs calculations.
To make more people aware of energy assistance options and to make it easier for them to know how and where to apply, AARP Connecticut has produced a brochure called Staying Warm This Winter.
AARP Connecticut has distributed 20,000 brochures to various organizations, including churches and faith-based communities, and is making it available to individuals, as well. Brochures were sent to 400 churches, asking leaders to share the information with their congregations on February 26, AARP Connecticutâs Energy Awareness Day. So far, 35 churches and faith-based communities have requested 3,000 additional brochures to distribute that Sunday.
The pamphlet lists assistance programs with qualification guidelines and contact information. It also informs Connecticut residents of shut-off protections, payment plan options, budget billing, and home heating help.
The brochure is free and available online by visiting AARP.org/CT. Click on the announcement called âAARP CTâs Free Energy Assistance Guideâ and download the brochure, or call 866-295-7279 and a provide a name and address to have one mailed.
Keeping heat and electric bills affordable is a legislative priority for AARP Connecticut in 2006. Clearly, more work needs to be done to ensure that Connecticut consumers are protected from high energy and utility costs and AARP Connecticut is committed to doing just that this year. For now, Staying Warm This Winter offers tips to address immediate heating needs and helps residents take full advantage of energy assistance programs available to them.
