Cascella Worries Aloud About Road Conditions

Although the subject wasn't on the agenda, the condition of town roads

produced a lively exchange between the Legislative Council and First Selectman

Bob Cascella at Wednesday night's council meeting.

Council Vice Chairman Melissa Pilchard expressed concern about the condition

of The Boulevard since sewer work began there and asked whether something

could be done, such as rolling, to prevent the area from becoming a dust bowl

during the summer.

Mr Cascella said the road has to be allowed to settle before it can be paved

because sewer pipes were installed as deep as 20-feet below the surface.

"There may also be drainage needed, which can't be done until next year's

budget - after July 1 - and only if there are funds available," he said,

pointing out that the council last week cut $350,000 from road reconstruction

funding in next year's budget.

"We may have to re-name it, Dusty Boulevard," he said.

The resurfacing of Walnut Tree Hill Road, on the other hand, was finished this

week.

Mr Cascella said the developer of Walnut Tree Village and Yankee Gas, working

with the town's public works director and town enginner, finished the road "as

promised" by the end of April.

The last steps - a binder coat and paving - were completed on Monday and

Tuesday, he said. "All it needs now is a yellow line. But I hope - now that

this wide, smooth road is finished - that everyone who drives on it will

remember that the speed limit on this road is 25 mph."
