A Response To Two Letters

To the Editor:

I would like to comment on two letters in the May 5 Letter Hive.

#1 (Isn’t it time we did the right thing?) I would add, do we really need the larger homes that are built today (3,4, 5,000-plus square feet with 3-plus baths), in the Northeast most are heated with oil. What about air conditioning, swimming pools, and all the gadgets we have that are powered by oil generated electricity?

(Gas prices in other countries) I have not researched it but I heard on a TV or radio program that the main reason their gas is priced so much higher is because they tax it more.

Let’s show some American ingenuity and do something about the situation. Back in the Carter era, oil prices went up and there were long lines to buy gas (if the station had any) and people became interested in home energy conservation, more fuel-efficient vehicles, etc. A lot of the technology is already out there solar power, wind power, hybrid vehicles.

My niece had an energy efficient heating/cooling system installed when she built her home a few years ago, it utilizes well water to preheat or precool the air in her home. It was more expensive to install than a traditional system but I bet she’s laughing all the way to the bank today.

#2 (Modern European History) If the class is titled “Modern European History,” why is there no reference to World War II when the United States liberated France from Germany? How many Americans died so that France is free? How many French citizens have made the “ultimate sacrifice” for the United States?

On another historical note, the United States also defeated Japan, helped rebuild it, and “gave it back.” Is any of this being taught in our schools? Too often the United States is being portrayed as the bad guy/bully. We have made lots of mistakes but no country on earth has done so much for so many and asked for so little in return. As Colin Powell once said to the French, “All we asked for in return was a place to bury our dead.”

Thank You,

Susan Oberstadt
