Mildred D. Roberts

Former Newtown teacher Mildred D. Roberts, 70, died December 30 at Connecticut Hospice in Branford. She was the widow of Elliott Roberts.

Mrs Roberts was born in Danbury, November 5, 1930, a daughter of the late Charles and Dora (Carpenter) Hunter, and had been a lifelong area resident. After raising her family, she enrolled in an elementary teaching degree program at Western Connecticut State College, and was awarded a bachelor of science degree in 1969 as a specialist in kindergarten to eighth grade education. She was also named to the Kappa Delta Phi Honor Society upon graduation, and later established her career as a fourth grade teacher in the Newtown Public Schools, and taught in the Newtown school system from 1969 to 1994.

She had been a member of the New Fairfield Congregational Church for many years, and had served on the Outdoor Ministry Committee, was active in Bible study classes, and had been a member of the Stellar Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, in Danbury.

Mrs Roberts is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David and Laura Taylor, of New Fairfield; her daughter, Marcia and son-in-law Glen Wiedl of Corinth, Mass.; three sisters, Dorothy Ahlf and Charlotte Prybylski, both of Danbury, and Ruth Garcia of Charleston, S.C.; her brother, Charles Hunter of Hemingway, S.C.; her grandchildren, Patrick and Susan Wiedl of Mississippi, and David Taylor, Jr, of New Fairfield; her great-grandchildren, Phoenix and Dakota, both of Mississippi; and several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her sister, Doris Tift.

A Memorial Service will be held at the New Fairfield Congregational Church, 20 Gillotti Road, New Fairfield, on January 6 at 11 am.

The Tomlinson Funeral Home in Danbury was in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Connecticut Hospice, 61 Burban Avenue, Branford, CT 06405.
