iPhone Found

Newtown Police report a black iPhone was found on the Fairfield Hills campus near the walking paths on December 30. Anyone who lost an iPhone in that area is asked to contact the Newtown Police Department at 203-426-5841.

Too Fast For Conditions

Newtown Police report that officers responded to a one vehicle non-injury collision on Berkshire Road at 7:52 am January 1. The vehicle left the roadway, where it impacted an embankment and partially rolled onto its driver’s side back onto the roadway. Police issued Monica Cunha of Carmel, N.Y., an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions and making a restricted turn.

Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded to this incident.

Collision On Right Turn

Newtown Police report Racheal Maillet, 24, of Ansonia, operating a 2011 Nissan Juke, was traveling eastbound on Wasserman Way, in the shoulder lane, at 4:14 pm January 3. Robert Fern, 69, of Milford, operating a 2021 Mazda CX-30, was traveling eastbound on Wasserman Way in the travel lane. Police say Maillet attempted to turn right onto Berkshire Road when the front passenger’s side of Fern’s vehicle struck the front driver’s side of Maillet’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Maillet was issued a verbal warning for failure to drive in the proper lane.

Violation Of Probation Arrest

Newtown Police report Michael Gillece, 36, of New Milford, was arrested at 5:59 pm January 3 on the charge of violation of probation. He was released on a $35,000 bond with a court date of January 24 in Danbury Superior Court.

Flipped Vehicle

Newtown Police report Sonia Carpio, 33, of New Haven, operating a 2002 Toyota Corolla, was traveling westbound on Berkshire Road at 9:20 am January 4. Carpio’s vehicle traveled off the right hand side of the roadway while negotiating a left hand turn, driving up an embankment and flipping over onto its roof.

No injuries were reported but Carpio was transported to Danbury Hospital as a precaution.

Carpio was issued an infraction for operating without a license and failure to maintain a lane.

Crash In Intersection

Newtown Police report ChristieAnn Colavito, 26, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2013 Audi S5 Quattro, was traveling southbound on Main Street and turned left onto Schoolhouse Hill Road at 4:17 pm January 4. Wilson Balbuca-Guartazaca, 32, of New Milford, was stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of Schoolhouse Hill Road and Main Street. Colavito’s vehicle struck Balbuca-Guartazaca’s vehicle as she made the turn.

No injuries were reported. Colavito’s vehicle was towed.

Colavito was issued a verbal warning for failure to maintain a proper lane.

Failure To Grant Right Of Way

Newtown Police report Herbert Smith, 55, of Derby, operating a 2017 Subaru Impreza, was traveling southbound on Pole Bridge Road and came to the stop sign at the intersection with Berkshire Road at 5:07 pm January 4. Eduardo Jaen-Munoz, 41, of Danbury, was traveling westbound on Berkshire Road. Police say Smith started to make a left turn onto Berkshire Road and the left rear section of his vehicle made contact with the left front section of Jaen-Munoz’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Smith was issued a written warning for failure to grant right-of-way from a stop sign.

Slid On Wet Pavement

Newtown Police report Porro Abreu, 29, of Trumbull, operating a 2014 Ford Focus, was traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road in wet roadway conditions at 5:45 pm January 4. Heather Szor, 51, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2019 Mercedes E300, was traveling northbound on Jordan Hill Road and came to a stop at the stop sign at the intersection with Berkshire Road. Police say Abreu began making a right turn onto Jordan Hill Road and began to slide on wet pavement. Abreu’s vehicle crossed over the southbound lane on Jordan Hill Road and into the northbound lane, where the left front section of the vehicle made contact with the left rear side of Szor’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Abreu only has a learner’s permit and was alone in the vehicle. He was issued an infraction for making a restricted turn and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

Illegal Operation

Newtown Police report Joseph Aranjo, 54, of Bridgeport, was arrested at 6:32 pm January 5 on the charges of illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under suspension and traveling unreasonably fast. He was released on a promise to appear with a court date of January 19 in Danbury Superior Court.

Evading Responsibility Arrest

Newtown Police report at 8:17 pm January 5, officers were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident in the area of Elm Drive and CT-302. Not finding the operator, officers searched and were able to locate the individual in the area of Scudder Road and Cobblestone Road. Fernando Arevalo-Reinsoso, 25, of Danbury, was arrested at 8:47 pm January 5 on the charges of illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under suspension, evading responsibility for injury or property damage, illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and making an improper turn or stop with no signal. He was released on a $500 bond with a court date of January 24 in Danbury Superior Court.

DUI Arrest

Newtown Police report Matthew Broomer, 20, of Newtown, was arrested by warrant on January 9 on the charges of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, failure to keep right, and failure to drive in the proper lane.

Broomer was released on a written promise to appear in Danbury Superior Court later that day.

Struck Stone Wall

Newtown Police report Jeremy Riley, 33, of New Fairfield, was traveling northbound on Parmalee Hill Road at 4:06 pm January 9. Riley’s vehicle went off the roadway and struck a stone wall. Riley left the scene following the incident.

Charges are pending.

Newtown Police responded to a two-vehicle crash reported at 5:41 pm Wednesday, January 4, at the intersection of Church Hill and Wendover roads. According to the incident report, a 2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata being operated by Timothy Holian, 68, of Newtown, traveling on Church Hill Road, was struck by a 2021 Nissan Rogue SV being operated by Vincent E. Moore, 59, of Waterbury, after Moore failed to stop and yield for a posted stop sign on Wendover Road. The Miata sustained heavy and disabling damage to its driver’s side front door and fender and was towed from the scene. The Rogue sustained moderate front end damage and was able to be driven from the scene. Both operators were wearing seatbelts. No injuries were reported. Moore was issued an infraction for failing to obey a stop sign. —Bee Photo, Hicks
