Cancellations & Postponements: Feb. 5

Groups and organizations that need to postpone or cancel events planned for Wednesday, February 5, due to the weather are invited to contact Newtown Bee Associate Editor Shannon Hicks, at  (preferred) or 203-426-3141 to get their word out. Do not leave a message regarding cancellations or postponements on The Bee’s voicemail. If no one answers, send an email to Miss Hicks.shannon@thebee.com

In addition, businesses that decide to close early — or even open late — are encouraged to contact Miss Hicks with those details. Announcements will be posted on The Bee’s website, and also sent out through social media, as they arrive.

*UPDATE (1:30 pm): All Parks & Rec programs scheduled for today have been cancelled.

*(11:30 am): Tonight's Warrior Cup game, a benefit between Newtown High School and Joel Barlow ice hockey teams at Danbury Ice Area, to raise funds for Wounded Warrior Project, has been postponed to February 13. Start time will be 7:50 pm.

*(10:20 am): Tonight's Newtown Choral Society rehearsal has been cancelled.

*(9:45 am): Today's Newtown Bridge Club games have been cancelled.

The next regular sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, February 11.

Also, tonight's Board of Education-Public Buildling Site Commission special meeting has been cancelled.

*(9:15 am): The Sheep Shoppe will be closed today due to weather conditions, owner Nancy Gould has announced.

Tonight's knit-together is also cancelled, said Ms Gould. She expects to reopen tomorrow for regular hours (12-8 pm).

 *(8 am) Newtown Municipal Center will not open until at least 10 am Wednesday. 

Also, Governor Malloy has announced that tandem tractor trucks have been banned from I-84 until further notice. 

*(7:45 am) Governor Malloy has ordered all first-shift non-essential state employees to stay home today in response to the winter storm conditions across the state. The impact on second-shift employees will be evaluated later in the day. State employees are encouraged to contact their supervisors for further guidance.

*Newtown Municipal Center will have at least a one hour delayed opening this morning. First Selectman Pat Llodra will monitor the weather and extend the delay if needed. A notice posted on the town's website is encouraging all to call before they drive anywhere; the first selectman's office can be reached at 203-270-4201

*The EverWonder Experience will not be opening today.

*Avance Day Spa in Sand Hill Plaza will not be opening today.

*Due to the current weather conditions local Union Savings bank branches will have a delayed opening, at 11 am. Bank officials will continue to monitor the weather, however, according to Marie O'Neill, EVP Chief Marketing Officer of Union Savings.

*Tonight's Zoning Board of Appeals and Board of Selectmen meetings have been cancelled.
