A Letter from Christine Miller.

To the Editor:

Last night the Newtown Board of Education demonstrated blatant hypocrisy and disregard for the members of our community who have bravely supported Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in our schools.

When my children, ages 18 and 11 — and others — spoke about the racism they have endured and the need for change, members of the audience clapped.

[Board of Education Chair] Deborra Zukowski then made a rule that clapping was not allowed. Apparently, she and other members of the board are not big rule followers, because they clapped loudly at every single person who showed up to talk about the terrible plight of wearing a mask in school.

Their body language and facial expressions were also quite different as they openly showed support for the end of masks in a way they never have for those fighting to end racism. Board member Jennifer Larkin and others called the wearing of masks traumatic, and expressed great concern for students who might be bullied for not wearing masks.

My kids can’t take off their skin color.

Respectfully,

Christine Miller
