The Newtown High School Blue & Gold Booster Club has announced this week that it will be awarding four $1,000 scholarships to NHS senior scholar-athletes. The funds for the program were generated by the year 2000 profits from the Blue & Gold Booster Club concession stand at the football stadium.
âWe always want to thank everyone who assisted in staffing this facility,â said Mike Kelley, B&G president, âand, most importantly, we want to thank Rich Barillari and Dom Cesaro, owners of Dunkin Donuts in Newtown, who donated all of our coffee, donuts and paper products for the entire season. Without their very generous donation for the fifth year in a row we would not have been able to make this important scholarship program happen.â
The concession stand was open for 26 of the 37 events held at the stadium last year.
And because of the success of the stand, two females and two males will be presented with $1,000 scholarships. To be eligible, applicants must be graduating seniors with a grade point average of 2.5 or better in their senior year; they must have participated in a varsity sport in their junior or senior years; their families must be current, active members of the booster club for at least one year; and they intend for further their education by attending an accredited college or two-year technical/vocational program.
Deadline for filing applications is April 15, 2001. Any applications received after that date will not be considered. Applications may be picked up at the Newtown High School guidance office from Jane McEvoy.
Applicants should be prepared to list the sports they have participated in, the school they are planning to attend, and the course of study they expect to undertake. Also, applicants will be asked to answer one question (What do you, as a student, think we, the Blue & Gold Booster Club, can do to strengthen the athletic program at Newtown High School?) and then write an essay of at least 400 words describing a meaningful experience they have had in sports and how it has helped them, as an individual, prepare for the future.
