High School Cross Country

Anyone interested in running for the Newtown High School girls’ cross country team in the fall is asked to call Christine (426-3432), Megan (270-9661) or Sarah (270-1877) for further information.

Sandlot Tennis

The Newtown Tennis Association hosts Sandlot Tennis every Wednesday night, from 5 pm until dark, at Dickinson Park. Anyone looking for a game is invited to head down to the courts. Visit the website at www.ntaweb.com for further information.

ASA Softball Tournament

The Connecticut ASA (Amateur Softball Association) will hold the 2002 ASA Women’s Major Fast Pitch National Championship tournament August 16-20 in Stratford (at Deluca Field and Short Breach Park). Twenty-four teams from around the nation will compete in the double-elimination tournament. The Stratford Brakettes (who finished third last year) will return as the host team. Woodbury Ski & Skate

The Woodbury Ski & Skate Park is accepting bookings for its annual skate camps for skateboarders, inline skaters, and bikers. Camps will be held July 29 through August 2/4 and August 26 through August 30/September 2 (the camps can be five- or seven-day camps and cost is $299 for the five-day and $350 for the seven-day). Camps will run from 10:30 am to 6 pm and feature lessons, video analysis, and open skate sessions. To cool off, swimming will also be available. American Legion/VFW Golf Tournament

The 8th annual American Legion Post 202 Timothy Powell Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Monday, August 26, at Rock Ridge Country Club in Newtown. It will be an 18-hole scramble with a shotgun start, rain or shine. Registration fee of $95 provides 18 holes of tournament golf with cart, steak barbecue at VFW Hall, refreshments, trophies, and cash prizes. Register early. Call George A. Greater Monroe Girls Ice Hockey

The Greater Monroe Girls Ice Hockey team is looking for players in grades 7 through 12. Drawing from Newtown, Monroe and several other surrounding towns, the program will call the Wonderland of Ice in Bridgeport its home. This is no contact hockey. Savarese Pool Tournament

The Joe Savarese Memorial Nine-Ball Tournament will be held Sunday, July 28, at the Boston Billiard Club in Danbury. Sign-in is at 11 am and play (double-elimination) begins at 1 pm. Early registration is $25, with registration on the day of the tournament at $35. Breakfast and lunch compliments of What About A Bagel. There will be prizes, raffles and more. Proceeds will benefit the Joe Savarese Memorial College Fund. Call 1-203-798-POOL for further information.
