Newtown High School’s golf team finished second to rival Pomperaug of Southbury in the South-West Conference championship meet at Danbury’s Ridgewood Country Club on May 30.

Pomperaug shot a 309 in the 18-hole competition. Newtown had a 318. The Nighthawks had the third-, fourth-, fifth-, and seventh-place golfers but their depth was not enough to overcome the Panthers, whom they lost to by just one stroke during the regular season. Weston, which won the tournament last year to surprise regular-season winner Pomperaug, came in third by shooting a 347 this year.

Newtown’s Brian LeBlanc shot a 77 to finish third and was followed closely by teammates Colin Patrick (78) and Graham Hubbert (81). Josh Houle was right in the mix of the top finishers, firing an 82 to place seventh. Newtown’s Vivek Tedla had a 94 to place 29th. The Panthers had the top two finishers as John VanDerLaan shot a 69 and Mike VanDerLaan shot a 74.

Pomperaug was unbeaten and Newtown suffered only that regular-campaign setback to the Panthers during match play this spring.
