Scholar Athletes Honored

The Connecticut Association of Schools Scholar Athletes recently honored Newtown High School students Carolyn Brennan, valedictorian for the Class of 2004, and senior Andrew Fiscella for their academic and athletic achievements.

Frank Deford, noted journalist and commentator, presented the award. Mr Deford is a writer for Sports Illustrated as well as a Wednesday morning commentator on National Public Radio.

The Connecticut High School Scholar Athlete Awards Program honors two outstanding students, one male, one female, each year. Their academic and athletic careers must be exemplary, with a minimum grade point average of 3.5. They must possess standards and achievements that are a model to others. They must also exhibit outstanding school and community service, high levels of integrity, self-discipline, and courage. Finally, they must have participated in interscholastic athletics; with a minimum of two years participation in a CIAC sponsored sport in Connecticut.

Typically, the Scholar Athlete Award goes to a boy and girl who have the highest academic average at Newtown High School and who have earned varsity letters in at least two sports.
