Marjorie H. Campbell

Marjorie H. Campbell, 86, of Newtown, died on July 7, at Danbury Hospital, after a long illness.

She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Robert J. Campbell. Marjorie was a resident of Newtown for the last 61 years.

Mrs Campbell was born on October 13, 1934, the daughter of the late Charles F. and Marion F. Hayner of Troy, New York. She graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1952 and studied at the Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1955.

She was proud to be a stay-at-home mom and community volunteer when her children were young. She was a former Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader for ten years. Marjorie was a past president of the Sandy Hook Elementary School PTA and founded the Jolly Green Giant Fair. She was vice president of the state PTA and served on the Head O’ Meadow Elementary School Specification Committee. She was a former deputy Republican Registrar of Voters and moderator. Marjorie loved animals and was a founding member and officer of Newtown Spay and Neuter Association. Additionally, she was a member and past officer of the Order of Eastern Star and the Order of the Amaranth. She was a member of St Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Newtown and taught CCD there for many years. She also attended and taught Sunday School at Trinity Episcopal Church with her husband.

Marjorie was accomplished in all types of needle arts. She was a founding member of the Fairfield County Embroidery Guild and served as an officer for many years. She was also a member and officer of the Counted Cross Stitch Society and Connecticut Valley Embroidery Guild. She taught needle arts in Newtown adult education classes and was a judge in many needle-art competitions.

In later years, she became a quilter and made many quilts for her family and friends. After the passing of her daughter, Sherry, she enjoyed knitting and donating scarves to the Praxair Cancer Center.

Marjorie and her husband loved to travel and were particularly fond of cruising. She made 44 cruises, with a total of 455 days at sea. Together they visited 46 countries.

Marjorie is survived by three children and their spouses: Deborah Cody and her husband, Ken, of Southbury, Robert Campbell and his wife, Marybeth, of Newtown, and Meg Reilly and her husband, Patrick, of Newtown. She is predeceased by her daughter Sheryl O’Marra. Sheryl is survived by her husband, Colin O’Marra, and his spouse, Trish, of Litchfield, who remain close with the family. Mrs Campbell is also survived by nine grandchildren: Melissa and Andy Garthwait, Colin and Brian O’Marra, Bradley, Kristen, and Matt Campbell, and Sean and Katie Reilly. She was blessed with three great-grandchildren: Mason and Sophie Garthwait, and Skylar O’Marra. Marjorie is also survived by her brother, Robert Hayner.

Calling hours for Marjorie were held Sunday, July 11, at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury. A funeral service was held Monday, July 12, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 36 Main Street, Newtown. A graveside service followed at Newtown Village Cemetery.
