A Clay Artists’ Collaborative Effort

SHERMAN — The Connecticut Clay Artists (CCA), a group of ten professional potters and artists from different towns in Fairfield County, will show their work for the eighth year at the Jewish Community Center the weekend of August 17-19. The annual Book and Barn Sale will also occur that weekend at Sherman Library.

CCA artwork includes professionally hand built, wheel thrown and sculpted clay made from stoneware, porcelain and earthenware. The clay is fired in electric, wood, gas and raku kilns. Clay pieces in this show are both functional and decorative.

A highlight of the show will be the display of collaborative artwork. The group has become famous for its team teapots. Other cooperative items on display will be ceramic head sculptures, ceramic “machines” and ceramic birdhouses. The collaborative forms are made with parts crafted by individual members and placed in a whimsical relationship by teams of CCA members. The members of Connecticut Clay Artists meet monthly in each others’ studios for workshops and programs.

The show, dubbed “CCA8 @ JCCS,” will have a festive wine and cheese opening on Friday evening, August 17, at 5 to 7 pm; many of the artists will be present.

The show will continue on Saturday and Sunday, August 18 and 19, from 10 am to 4 pm each day. Videos about various ceramic techniques and pottery cultures will be on view during the show. In addition to show-quality ceramics objects, there will be a seconds section, which has proved to be extremely popular.

Members of Connecticut Clay Artists include Paula Cook of Ridgefield, Sue Ann Heller of Fairfield, Katie Tynan Helu of Ridgefield, Sarah Koster of Norwalk, Annette Morasco Marcus of Brookfield, Paula Sibrack Marian of Sherman, Karen Pinto of Newtown, Hannes Overgard of Wilton, Beth Herod of Stamford, and Peggy Thomas of Ridgefield.

The JCCS is located at 9 Route 39 South. For more information, call 860-355-8050.
