Glorydays -- August 4, 1995
This week in 1990
Four Newtown girls starred for the West Region girls' basketball team at the
third running of the Nutmeg State Games. Katie Lyddy, Melissa Eigen, Sarah
Hirou, and Megan Czaplicke all played major roles in the West Youth Division
team's winning of the gold medal. The team was coached by Newtown's Dick
Eigen.
This week in 1985
Laura Oberstadt and Cindy Smith each blasted three-run homers as Newtown
Chiropractic Center beat New Fairfield 23-2 in the Berkshire Girls' Fastpitch
Softball League. Debi Koster was the winning pitcher in the game. In the
following ball game, though, Newtown blew a 9-4 lead and lost 14-12 to Bethel,
finishing the season league runner-up. The team, coached by Klaus Ertl, Lin
Hertberg, and Rich Woycik also included Kim Pelletreau, Jenny Woycik, Kasey
Keating, Elena Alonte, Sarah Kenyon, Lisa Chernoff, Beth Schultz, Chrissy
Gardner, April Ertl, Sue McAuliffe, Joy Liggins, Chris Peterson, and Lisa
Kick.
This week in 1980
Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Newtown Little League's
13-year-old all-star team rallied for three runs in its last at bat to beat
Wilton 4-3 in the State Championship game. Scott Thoma led the inning off with
a double, Mark Langmead reached on an error, and Jeff Saputo tripled them home
to tie the game at 3-3. John Lelas then walked and stole second base before
Chris Sherburne singled home Saputo with the game winner. The team was coached
by Mike Eisenbach and Dan Baker.
This week in 1975
It's been called one of the most difficult opening golf holes in the country,
but Newtown Country Club pro-shop employee James Crick III made a hole-in-one
on the 190-yard first hole while playing with Rick Rasmussen, Jim Dougherty,
and club pro, Ron Hodge.
This week in 1970
The Newtown Parks and Recreation swim program promoted its swimmers through
the ranks at the conclusion of their season. Those achieving the highest
ranking (senior lifesavers) included Gwen Comstock, Tom Hayes, Robert
Schaedler, Louis Tassinary, and Pam Smith.
This week in 1965
Gary Grubisa recieved a trophy for the Newtown Little League's batting
championship at the league picnic at Taylor Field. Bruce Taylor, who pitched
to a record of 9-0 during the season, also recieved a trophy for Outstanding
Pitcher. The Platt Lumber Dodgers, for whom both Grubisa and Taylor played,
were presented with individual trophies for winning the Majors Division.
This week in 1960
Ben Jacobellis, Emmy Farrell, Lee Stapelberg, Mike Hoitko, Mike Gillotti,
George Weber, Floyd Chaffee, Armando Torcellini, John Small, Bill Messinger,
Joe Brunetti, Walt Allison, Bob Shannon, and Bill Muier were some of the many
local golfers competing for Newtown Country Club against Highland Golf Club of
Shelton in the largest home-in-home tournament in the area. The tournament,
which had over 112 golfers competing, saw Shelton's team win the first match
at NCC, but the locals exacted their revenge with a narrow victory at
Highland.
This week in 1955
The Giants captured the first-ever Newtown Little League championship by
virtue of their 8-1 regular season record. In the season's final game, the
Dodgers overcame the Yankees 7-1 to sew up second place with a 6-4 mark. The
Yanks finished at 5-5 and the Red Sox at 0-9. Don Steisel, of the Yankees, won
the league batting title with a .764 average. He was followed by Jim Tenney
(.677), Chip Morgan (.620), and Cliff Beardsley (.604).
This week in 1950
George Smart fired a sizzling round of 66 in the qualifying round of Newtown
Country Club's Men's Club Championship Tournament. Pairings for the 1950
championship flight included Smart vs Walt Morgan, Art Carmody vs William
Cole, Fred Bauer vs Anthony Angelo, Jules Tomanio vs Emmy Farrell, Mike Hoitko
vs Bart Carmody, Francis Hubbell vs Jack Sheppard, Leo Iasello vs Fred
Bauermeyer, and Dave Johnson vs George Gehcas.
