Toy Soldier Auction
w/3 cuts
NEW YORK CITY -- An extremely rare Britains Ltd toy soldier set of Argentine
Infantry and Cavalry led the parade at Henry Kurtz Ltd's recent Toy Soldier
and Miniature Figure Auction, selling for $5,040, above its pre-sale estimate
of $2,5/3,500.
The display box, which included eight infantry and ten cavalry figures, was
issued by the English toy soldier firm only from 1939 to 1941 and was never
officially listed in the Britains catalogue. Appropriately, it was purchased
by a Latin American collector, who outbid his American and Canadian rivals.
Second high of the day was posted by another rare Britains item, a counter
display box featuring 37 figures of mainly British army, navy and aviation
units. Estimated at $1/1,500, it fetched $2,460 (all prices cited include the
12 percent premium).
Other highs included a Britains Japanese Cavalry set dating from the late
1930s, for $1,450, and a rare set of toy troopers representing The Royal
Canadian Regiment for $1,230. An unusual Britains set of The Royal Marines in
tropical service dress brought $1,060.
Top price for an individual miniature soldier was realized by a superb
Courtenay-Greenhill equestrian figure of the English King Henry V, decked out
in full regalia, which fetched $1,230 after spirited bidding. Among the many
fine toy soldier sets from the French firm of CBG Mignot was a diorama box
depicting Napoleon's farewell to his troops at Fontainebleau. The set,
comprised of 15 figures, sold for $896. This summer sale was at the Warwick
Hotel.
Henry Kurtz Ltd will conduct its next toy soldier and miniature figure sale on
Saturday, October 17. For further information or to obtain a catalogue,
