Charles Denninger

Charles R. Denninger, 45, husband of Frances (Morgan) Denninger, of 5 Baldwin

Road in Newtown, president of Cali Chemical Company of Norwalk, died May 16 in

Danbury Hospital, shortly after being stricken ill at his home.

He was born in Jamaica, N.Y. on August 3, 1953, son of Charles W. and Alice

(Freund) Denninger of Elmont, N.Y.

He graduated in 1971 from Holy Cross High School in Bayside, Long Island, and

graduated in 1975 from Manhattan College in Riverdale, N.Y.

Mr Denninger was a member of Sigma XI Chemical National Honor Society. A music

enthusiast, he played keyboard and bass in several rock bands. A computer

specialist, he was adept at working with both software and hardware.

He is survived, besides his wife and parents, by two sons, Charles T.

Denninger of Danbury and Thomas R. Denninger of Newtown; a daughter, Kristin

Denninger of Newtown; a brother, Richard J. Denninger of Denville, N.J.; his

grandmother, Alice Freund of Queens Village, N.Y.; two sisters, Catherine

Hughey of Wantagh, N.Y. and Theresa Mueller of Valrico, Fla.; his godparents,

Robert and Dorothy Hunter of Franklin Square, N.Y.; and several nieces and

nephews.

Funeral services were held from the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street,

Newtown, to St Rose Church in Newtown for a Mass of Christian Burial.

Interment was in St Rose Cemetery.

Contributions in his memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Helen A. Schatz

Helen A. (Makofsky) Schatz, 94, of 28 French King Highway, Greenfield, Mass.,

died May 18 in Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility. She was the mother of E.

Joan Weldon of Sandy Hook.

She was born in Montague, Mass., May 22, 1904, the daughter of Anthony and

Veronica (Brozo) Makofsky.

She attended Montague schools and had been a resident of Greenfield since

1922.

Mrs Schatz was a homemaker and operated a vegetable stand for many years on

the French King Highway.

She was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church and a member of the Emblem

Club and was a former member of the St Joseph's Guild.

She was an avid fisherman and card player. She enjoyed knitting and

crocheting.

Her husband, Sigmund F. Schatz, died in 1968. A daughter, Dorothy Radtke

Miller, died Feb. 23, 1997.

In addition to her daughter, survivors include two sons, Richard S. and

Bernard E., both of Greenfield; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and

several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Friday, May 21, at 8:15 am at the Kostanski Funeral

Home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 in Blessed Sacrament

Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Calling hours were scheduled for Thursday, May 20, from 6 to 9 pm at the

funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Greenfield Area Animal Shelter, P.O.

Box 786, Greenfield, MA 01302, or to the Greenfield Senior Center, 54 High

Street, Greenfield, MA 01301.

John Komornik

John J. Komornik of 4 Charlton Hill, Hamden, died May 15 in New Haven. He was

the brother of Joseph V. Komornik of Newtown.

He was the husband of the late Barbara (Brooks) Komornik, brother of Christina

Komornick of Stratford, Stephine Tomasko of Bridgeport, Rose M. Komornik of

Stratford, Frances Hermanson of Bridgeport, and Henry J. Komornik of

Huntington. He was also survived by many nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held May 18 from Sisk Brothers Funeral Home, 3105 Whitney

Avenue, Hamden, with a Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Mt Carmel

Church.

Jane Korczakowski

Jane (Hunyack) Korczakowski, 81, of Fairfield, died May 14 in Southport Manor.

She was the sister of Walter Hunyack of Newtown.

Mrs Korczakowski, a retired florist for Daybreak Nursery in Westport, was born

in Pittsburgh, Penn., and was a Fairfield resident for 47 years. She was a

member of various Nutmeg Bowling Leagues and the Holy Ghost Russian Orthodox

Church Women's Group.

In addition to her brother, she is survived by her husband, John Korczakowski;

two daughters, Dolores Yevich of Bridgeport and Nancy Colombo of New York;

three sisters, Mary Kroll of Fairfield, Olga Metcho of Stratford and Tillie

Killian of North Carolina; four grandchildren, William and James Yevich and

Ahmed and Adam Colombo; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held May 18 at Larson Funeral Home, 2496 North Avenue,

Bridgeport, and at Holy Ghost Russian Orthodox Church, East Main Street,

Bridgeport. Burial was in Lawncroft Cemetery, Fairfield.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 607 Main

Avenue, Norwalk.

Gerald L. Blackwell

Gerald L. Blackwell, 53, of Bridgeport, died May 17 at the V.A.M.C. in West

Haven. He was the brother of Calvin Blackwell of Newtown.

Born in Bridgeport, he had been a lifelong resident and attended the

Bridgeport school system. He was a Vietnam era veteran of the Army. He was a

member of the Holy Tabernacle, C.O.G.I.C. and the Gospel Chorus.

In addition to his brother, survivors include his wife, Bonnie (Boone)

Blackwell of Bridgeport; two sons, Jason Blackwell of Bridgeport and Gerald

Blackwell, Jr, of North Carolina; a daughter, Vera Blackwell of Stratford;

four other brothers, Thomas and Richard Blackwell of Bridgeport, Robert

Blackwell of Norwalk and Kenneth Blackwell of West Haven; five sisters,

Valerie Chassagns, Brenda and Gloria Blackwell, all of Bridgeport, Patricia

Edwards of Florida and Janet Blackwell of Maryland; six grandchildren; and a

host of nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 21, 11 am, at the Messiah Baptist

Church, 210 Congress Street, Bridgeport, with Bishop Ivory W. Holden

officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery with full military honors.

Friends may call on Friday, May 21, from 10 am until time of the service at

the church.

Arrangements were by Morton's Mortuary Inc, 25 Margaret E. Morton Lane,

Bridgeport.

John S. Arsenian

John S. Arsenian, 40, of Oxford, husband of Lorrie (Lisi) Arsenian, died May

16 in Yale-New Haven Hospital.

He was born in Bridgeport, Conn., son of Gloria (LaBarba) Arsenian of Monroe

and the late John J. Arsenian. He was a Trumbull resident before moving to

Oxford 13 years ago, and a supervisor with the Town of Trumbull, Highway

Department.

Mr Arsenian attended Sacred Heart University and was a member of the National

Hot Rod Willy's Club. He was an avid amateur archaeologist and guitarist.

Survivors in addition to his wife, who is a teacher at Newtown High School,

and mother, include a son, Nicholas J. Arsenian of Oxford; a sister, Mary

Carrubbo of Monroe; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held May 20 in St Theresa Church, Trumbull, with a Mass

of Christian Burial. Interment was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

The Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street & Gorham Place, Trumbull, was

in charge of arrangements.

Marian M. Warner

Marian M. Warner, 87, wife of the late J. Hobart Warner, former headmaster of

Wooster School, died May 14, in Rochester, N.Y., where she had resided for

several years.

She was born in Port Chester, N.Y. on June 15, 1911. She was a resident of

Danbury for more than 50 years while her husband was associated with Wooster

School. She was an honorary life member of the Danbury Garden Club as well as

the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut.

Mrs Warner is survived by two daughters, Judith Edwards of Penfield, N.Y. and

Joanna Kennedy of Brookline, Mass; five grandchildren; and two

great-grandsons.

The funeral service was held May 17 at St Paul's Episcopal Church, Rochester,

N.Y. Interment will be in Zoar Cemetery, Sandy Hook, on Friday, May 21, at 1

pm.

Contributions in her memory may be to a charity of one's choice.

Jane B. Kunkel

Jane B. Kunkel, 79, of Oxford Road in Oxford died May 16 in Danbury Hospital.

She was the mother of Dr Mark Kunkel of Newtown.

She was born in Mineola, N.Y. on August 19, 1919, daughter of the late Phillip

and Luola (Armstrong) Bliss. Mrs Kunkel was educated in Greenwich Conn., and

Boston, Mass. A resident of Oxford for 15 years, she had previously lived in

Brookfield and Heritage Village in Southbury.

In addition to her son, Mrs Kunkel is survived by two sons, Paul Kunkel of

Questa, N.M. and Peter Kunkel of Taos, N.M.; six grandchildren; and one

great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Newtown on

Saturday, May 22, at 3 pm. Burial will take place at the convenience of the

family.

Friends may call on May 22 from 11 am to 2 pm at the Honan Funeral Home, 58

Main Street, Newtown.

Helen G. Cubberley

Helen G. "Lynn" Cubberley, 71, wife of Robert E. Cubberley of Naples, Fla.,

and Glenn Falls, N.Y., and formerly of Newtown, died May 15 at the home of her

daughter, Susan (Cubberley) Nute of Newtown.

She was born in McKeesport, Penn., January 31, 1928, daughter of the late Fred

W. and Elizabeth (Jardnhazy) Cooper. She had been a resident of Newtown from

1969 to 1981.

She was a retired employee in the banking industry and a former member of the

First Assembly of God Church in Brookfield.

In addition to her husband and daughter, she is survived by three sons; Robert

E. Cubberley of Glen Mills, Penn., Ronald Cubberley of Federal Way, Wash., and

Douglas Cubberley of Norman, Okla.; another daughter, Amy Cubberley Scott of

Glens Falls, N.Y.; a brother, Franklin Cooper of Sparta, N.J.; five

grandchildren, Jason and Justin Cubberley, Rob and Lauren Nute, and Sophia

Dinkel; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at the First Assembly of God Church, 133 Junction

Road, Brookfield, May 16. Cremation was at the convenience of the family.

Brian E. Tani

Brian E. Tani, 28, of 29 Lexington Avenue, Greenwich, died May 14 at his home.

Born in Mount Kisco, N.Y., April 8, 1971, he was a son of Albert Tani of New

Milford and Dorrie (Colangelo) Carolan of Sandy Hook.

He was the brother of Christopher Carolan, Kevin Carolan and Erin Carolan of

Sandy Hook.

He graduated from Newtown High School in 1989, attended SUNY Morrisville,

N.Y., and was employed as a business manager at Marty Motors, Mt Kisco, N.Y.

Besides his parents, he was survived by another brother, Justin Tani of Dover

Plains, N.Y.; another sister, Maria Tani of Dover Plains, N.Y.; his

step-father, Kevin Carolan, Sr, of Sandy Hook; his maternal grandmother,

Elizabeth Colangelo of Portchester, N.Y.; and his paternal grandfather, Albert

Tani, Sr, of West Palm Beach, Fla.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St Rose of Lima Church, Newtown,

May 18. Burial was at the convenience of the family.

Peter J. Basso

Peter J. Basso, 82, beloved husband of June (Patenaude) Basso of Hawleyville

Road, Newtown, died May 16 at the Bethel Health Care after a long illness. He

was the father of Paul P. Basso and John R. Basso of Newtown.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., December 24, 1916, a son of the late Joseph and

Eva Basso. A resident of Newtown since 1965, he was employed by the State of

Connecticut for 20 years, first at Fairfield Hills Hospital and later at

Southbury Training School. During World War II, he served in the US Army and

took part in the Battle of the Bulge.

He was an active member of the Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Department and an

honorary member at the time of his death.

He is survived, besides his wife and sons, by two other sons, Michael J. Basso

of New Milford, and Phillip R. Basso of Naugatuck; a sister, Mary Ostas of

Congers, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren, Christopher, Ashley, Martin, Joshua,

Michael, Hayley and Nicholas Basso.

Funeral services were held at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown,

May 19. Interment was in Hillside Cemetery, Castleton, Vt.

Michael J. Ryan

Michael Joseph Ryan, 58, of Bethel Mission, Des Moines, Iowa, died May 13 at

the University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City, of cancer.

He was the brother of Jean (Ryan) Jackson of Newtown.

Mr Ryan was born in Creston, Iowa, the son of Helen Ryan. He was a

self-employed truck driver.

In addition to his sister and mother, he is survived by a daughter, Kerry Jean

Willett of Brooklyn, Iowa; a brother, Kevin Cyril Ryan of Des Moines, Iowa;

and two grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at the Merle Hay Funeral Home in Des Moines, Iowa.
